20. Mark Lanegan Band – Gray Goes Black

19. Quickbeam – Seven Hundred Birds

18. Beth Orton – Call Me The Breeze

17. Hurray For The Riff Raff – Ode to John and Yoko

16. Keston Cobblers’ Club – One, For Words

15. Ben Howard – Esmerelda

14. JBM – Crooked Branches

13. Calexico – Fortune Teller

12. The Walkmen – Heartbreaker

11. Emil Friis – Sand In Your Eyes

10. The Felice Brothers – Lincoln Continental
School run anthem 2012: a fine country drawl, a fine country band. Learn the words, sing it loud; altogether now:  I been missing you so listen/I liked to ask you can we drive through town.

9. Kyle Adem – Brother Follow
It’s a grower, this one. The momentum builds gradually, together with the tension, as it heads towards a passionate finale where the female vocal answers the male. A little bit of flute, banjo, bass drum – it’s quite a complex musical arrangement, while the lyrics hint at feudal times. Phew. It packs a punch.

8. The Lumineers – Flapper Girl
Piano-led tune that is rather understated yet really gets under your skin, particularly when the guitar comes in to answer the piano. Lovely, undulating melody, the power of this song lies in its simplicity as lead singer and guitarist, Wesley Schultz, lays his heart on his sleeve. Ho Hey, their star is deservedly in the ascendant.

7. The Band in Heaven – Sleazy Dreams
I am a 50p head when it comes to musical tastes: I like to mix it up big time. Heavy, bassy, pounding rhythm, wall of guitar noise, this is my (kitchen) dance floor number of 2012. Rock on.

6. Lord Huron – Time to Run
An epic Western of a tune: a story song with a foot-tapping rhythm that mimics the flight of yer man and a great mid point when the bells of doom literally ring for our outlaw friend on the run. He did it all for love, silly boy, ‘cause when they catch him, he’s toast.

5. Richard Buckner – Willow
This is a lying-in-a-daisy-meadow-looking-at-the-scudding-clouds sort of song. A gentle guitar arrangement coupled with some tender lyrics and softly sung vocals, all of which appeals to the latent hippy in me. Clippety clop: do you know Mr Buckner, I always remember.

4. We Are Augustines – The Ballad of a Patient Man
This song was my live gig moment of the year, amongst many great gigs. Fantastic guitar wig out and drummy bit in the middle, sung with the emotional intensity that’s trademark Billy McCarthy. Awesome song, bloody awesome band.

3. Delta Spirit – California
How do you write such heartbroken lyrics and marry them to such upbeat music? You move to California, buy a drum machine a keyboard and off you jolly well go. Big emotion, high impact, fantastic tune.

2. Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny – Liliput
A storming phantasmagoria of a song, guided by the soaring vocals of BJH, a sweeping string arrangement and a drumming tattoo of percussion. When I grow up I want to be just like Beth Jeans Houghton. Lili put your hands in mine and let’s dance: hoof power rules.

1. Willy Mason – Carry On
When I was much younger my dear old Pa used to say of classical music that it was music that spoke to him: this is a song that speaks to me. The poetic lyricism is felt; the metaphor carried is subtle and reflective; and the guitar, the guitar plays softly to my heart. A song of such fragile beauty for 2012: this is a song that speaks to me.

You can find downloads, streams, or videos for all the other tracks above by checking out MM’s Top 100 tunes here: 100 – 8180 – 6160 – 4140 – 21 and 20 – 1.

Image (c) Big Pic

A cracking month for new releases. Here is the some of the best of our posts from June, together with a couple of newbies for the perfect June mixtape. Check out some of the other ‘Best ofs’ in the sidebar too.

The Hunting Accident – Aubergine
Angular, compulsive, propulsive thump.

a

Download Damon Moon & The Whispering Drifters – The Fool mp3 (from Lungs, Dirt & Dreams)
Distorted and dishevelled Americana with solitary slow wind and sparse picking.

Download Efren – The Woods And The Wild mp3 (from Write A New Song)
Guitars throw out crunchy muscular riffs, drums pound and gruff vocals spit and snarl over the top of it all – a maelstrom of sonic destruction.

Speedy Ortiz – Silver Spring
Another fine example of their infectious and intelligent songwriting craft, a hook-laden, lyrically sharp slice of twitchy indie rock

a

Download The Chorderoys – No Prayin Man mp3 (from No Man’s Land)
Twangy, upbeat Country rock with a pounding rhythm and muscular guitar lines.

The Great American Desert – Carson City
Exquisite, compelling songs made for a campfire; made for a backporch and a bottle of whiskey; and made for the long, dark nights when no one but you seems awake in the world.

a

Ned Collette & Wirewalker – Long You Lie
Mix of experimental pop songwriting, musique concrete and dark folky soundscapes.

a

Download Edmund II – Golden Lung mp3 (from Floating Monk)
Starts with an orchestral flourish and gently insistent guitar lines, over which warm vocals gracefully swirl and hover to create three minutes of exquisite, honeyed pop music.

Download Deap Vally – Gonna Make My Own Money mp3 (from Gonna Make my Own Money single)
Rock-hard grit and all-girl soul.

Download Magic Trick – Invisible At Midnight mp3 (from Ruler Of The Night)
Poignant, offbeat folk-pop, with an eclectic menagerie of instrumentation.

Download Buffalo Killers – Get It mp3 (from Dig. Sow. Love. Grow.)
Intoxicating mix of ferocious blues psychedelia and good old fashioned rock and roll.

Download K-Holes – Rats mp3 (from Dismania)
Joyful and raucous gutterball punk.

Download Two Gallants – Broken Eyes mp3 (from The Bloom And The Blight)
Lovely slice of indie-folk – one of the songs of the month!

Download Sonnet Cottage – Most Unlikely mp3 (from Another Time)
Pastoral folk charmer, all whimsical mystery.

Download Shovels & Rope – Hollowpoint Blues mp3 (from NoiseTrade Sampler)
Catchy-as-hell junkyard folk-blues. Another contender for song of the month!

Download Rah Rah – Little Poems mp3 (from Little Poems 7″)
Dwells in the heavy complexity of relationships and being “poor, drunk and scared of being alone” told through a poetically skewed lens of life on the road, playing in a band.

Download Salesman – Ella mp3 (from Wasp EP)
Off kilter, somewhat warped take on Americana and desert country folk flavoured with a healthy dollop of psychedelia.

Download Waters – If Only mp3 (from If Only Single)
Another quality slice of psych-pop with added fuzz.

Download Fires – Blackout mp3 (from Echo Sounds EP)
Meaty, angular riffs, occasional discordant tones, and a nihilistic world view.

Download Ivan & Alyosha – All The Times We Had mp3 (from All The Times We Had)
Beautifully simple and melodic and tells a bittersweet tale of goodbye.

Screen Gems – Jazz Records
Just under two minutes of the best, catchiest, woozy, off-kilter, hazy, messed up screwball psych-pop that we’ve heard all year

a

Download Zachary CaleLove Everlasting mp3 (from Love Everlasting 7″)
Top notch fare from folky singer-songwriter.

Savaging Spires – Tell Me
Fine example of their Wicker-Man style pagan-folk stylings and eerie electronic collages.

a

Suburban Living – Float In Clouds
Supremely assured mix of lo-fi garage riffs and shimmering dream pop which combine to produce an infectiously catchy summery track.

a

O’Captain – Eyes Like Anchors
Starts with a sweetly catchy guitar strum and some heartfelt harmonies before throwing off the shackles two thirds of the way through and galloping full pelt to the end of the song.

a

Coastal – Black Stars / Flash Cars
A deceptively vicious tale referencing Jeremy Kyle, Starbucks and handfuls of pills amongst other things.

a

Download Daughn Gibson – In The Beginning mp3 (from All Hell)
Could be a classic down-on-their-luck country, could be creepy southern gothic, could be dark folk, but then there are the looped, eerie electronics and over it all is a rich baritone croon every bit the equal of Lee Hazlewood or Nick Cave.

Download Ormonde – Can’t Imagine mp3 (from Machine)
As devastating as it is gentle – warm, organic, glistening in half-light and shadow, slowly revealing highlight after highlight.

Download The Boombox Hearts – 100 (The Latest Flame) mp3 (from 100 (The Latest Flame) single)
Very much pop the 60s way with some noisy indie-style guitars (and yes, the title’s a reference to Elvis!).

And to finish off we have a new track from Tilly And The Wall, the stomping first single from their new album is called Love Riot, some glam tinged rock-pop from Foxygen with Waitin’ 4 U and Total Slacker’s cover of Oblivion by Grimes. Lastly we have the title track from Australian indie-darlings Skipping Girl Vinegar’s Chase The Sun EP, it is hi-fi swagger meets low-fi sway carving out their own heart warming, hobo-pop aesthetic.

And don’t forget to check our post about the Best of the Year so far – MM contributors pick their favourites of the first six months of 2012.

New Single from The Boombox Hearts.

Thoroughly enjoying this, the first taste from the Boombox Hearts debut album. It’s called 100 (The Latest Flame), and it’s very much pop the 60s way with some noisy indie-style guitars (and yes, the title’s a reference to Elvis!).

According to the band, “basically, it’s about: pop, love, a girl perhaps named Marie, cigarettes and wine and the Isle of Wight“, a winning combination in anyone’s book as far as we’re concerned. Download it below.

You can also get their Monte Carol EP via Bandcamp here or check out their blog here.

Download The Boombox Hearts – 100 (The Latest Flame) mp3 (from 100 (The Latest Flame) single)

Also check out a couple of previous releases, the gloriously downbeat, melancholy of C.H.P.L. and a stunning, sparse cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Cover Me that does the Boss proud!

Mad Mackerel's Best Of The Month: November 2011. Despite the end of the year fast approaching, thankfully the quality of new music shows no signs of slowing. Here are the best of our November offerings, together with some tasty new tracks to round off the mix.Over thirty great songs – just right for the roaring fire and the cocoa!

Download SiskiyouTwigs And Stones mp3 (from Keep Away The Dead)

Brilliantly judged restless blend of country rock, folk, and grand orchestral rock.

Download The Cloud Nothings – No Future / No Past mp3 (from Attack On Memory)

Intense indie rock – their best yet?

Download The Morning Birds – Born To Be Alive mp3 (from Surrender To This EP)

Skips along on the back of a groove so funky that it sounds like it was kidnapped from a 1970s New York disco and dragged into the new Millennium.

Download A Place To Bury Strangers – So Far Away mp3 (from Onwards To The Wall EP)

This on the other hand is a storming slab of pulverising noisemongering!

Download D.B. Rouse – The Hungover Lowdown Beat Up Burnt Out Blues mp3 (from Repent EP)

Folk yes, but beautifully judged with poignancy and pathos, self-reflection, regrets and dreams.

Download New London Fire – The Dirt The Blood The Faith mp3 (from The Dirt The Blood The Faith)

Sumptuous folk-western that howls its defiance and stands righteous in its anger at injustices suffered.

Download Black Creek – The Mustang mp3 (from Ragged Shark)

Dirty country rock and barrelling bar-room boogie.

Download Wounded Lion – Roman Values mp3 (from IVXLCDM)

Two and a half minutes of insane garage punk that is driven along by a heavyweight riff, pulsating percussion and a classic shouted vocal.

Download The Whalers – Lighthouse mp3 (from Paddle Easy EP)

Hypnotic, surf-inspired indie rock.

Download Lissy Trullie – Madeleine mp3 (from Lissy Trullie)

Slow-burning indie with echoes of the Velvets, even a bit of shoegaze maybe, but all is anchored by a distorted groove and her brilliant voice.

Country jam given a healthy injection of rockabilly rhythm.

Drenched, droney guitar lines and shattered fragments of disco, punk, and post hardcore rhythms.

Download The Royal Sea – This Summer mp3 (from The Royal Sea)

Surf-drums and sugar coated adrenalin rush – this should have been the woozy, feel good hit of the summer. Our pick of the month.

Download Pontiak – Lions Of Least mp3 (from Echo Ono)

Pulverising psych-rock.

Download Secret Colours – Faust mp3 (from EP3)

Channels the finest of the greats of late ’60s psychedelia, ’90s newgaze reverence, and a touch of driving, bucolic, no frills RnR straight from the greasiest of garages.

Download i am Love – Truest mp3 (from Truest 7″)

Rich, thoughtful folk with beautifully paced ebb and flow.

Download Rob St. John – Sargasso Sea mp3 (from Weald)

Simply stunning excursion into a shifting, twilight world that slowly builds on the back of a sparse, plucked guitar and almost spoken vocals into a swirling, epic peak of rhythmic guitars and cracked vocal harmonies.

And there’s more. To round off the mix we have a gorgeous new one from MM faves, the folky Bowerbirds who will release a new album in March on Dead Oceans, the first taste of individual bubblegum garage from Hunx (as in & His Punx) solo effort appropriately called Hairdresser Blues, the effortlessly sleazy Black Bananas (formerly RTX) and Rad Times from their forthcoming album Rad Times Xpress IV and lastly former Dawes member Alex Casnoff has a new band Harriet and a new EP Tell The Right Story. First up is the consistently wonderful Damien Jurado with some authentic, strummed desert blues. Nothing Is The News is the first taste of his forthcoming album Maraqopa.

Download Galaxy Sunrise – When Pigs Fly mp3 (from When Pigs Fly single)

Danish band The Boombox Hearts, despite what the name might suggest, offer up a very tasty line in melancholic folk that has drawn comparisons to Mrs M’s fave Mark Lanegan. Crank It Up is a lovely lo-fi example of their wares. Buy their Monte Carlo EP here.

Download The Boombox Hearts – Crank It Up mp3

The Lower 48 release their first full length album, Where All Maps End in the middle of December. The End is the first taste and showcases their warm organic sound and 60s folk influences beautifully without ever being derivative – one to look out for.

Download The Lower 48 – The End mp3 (from Where All Maps End)

We featured Niteflights and their exuberant indie pop back in the summer and they have now turned their hand to a cover of John Cale’s classic Paris 1919. See what you think.

Download Nightflights – Paris 1919 mp3 (John Cale cover)

Electric Flowers are fast gaining a reputation for being louder than My Bloody Valentine. Their self-titled debut EP contains the sonic epic Circles that will resonate long after the last note has faded away.

Download Electric Flowers – Circles mp3 (from Electric Circles EP)

Musically, Whales In Cubicles evoke a huge variety of influences from American greats such as Guided by Voices and Sebadoh, to songwriters such as Neil Young and Stephen Malkmus, all the way through to British heroes Black Sabbath, Blur and Radiohead. Having given away Terror of the Void in the summer they are now releasing a single on the ever reliable Young & Lost Club, who are also offering up Never And Ever as a free download.

Download Whales In Cubicles – Never And Ever mp3

Similarly The Quiet Americans appear to love nothing more than belting out some good old fashioned fuzzed up rock ‘n’ roll and do it extremely well. Their Medicine EP is available for free from their Bandcamp page and contains this noise-pop belter, Be Alone.

Download The Quiet Americans – Be Alone mp3 (from Medicine EP)

Indie psych rockers The Sunbears! released You Will Live Forever yesterday and we have two tracks for you – the infectious Give Love A Try and the more ironic They Think They’re Soooo Philosophical.

Kurt von Stetten will release his sixth full-length solo album Cyclops on December 13, on Static Motor Recordings. Effectively using simple song structures and minimal storytelling to create a record of intricate and eclectic garage rock.

Download Kurt von Stetten – Codify mp3 (from Cyclops)

And lastly (for now), we’re loving the catchy folkish strum of Swede Joakim Fritzner’s Thoughts On Us 23-3 from mini album/EP It’s Not Me… which gets a digital release today via Birds Will Sing For You Enterprises. A blend of Nick Drake, Laura Marling and even Peter Gabriel, this one has been on repeat since we first heard it.
