Thursday Means Six Of The Best!

A few new releases on the radar and well worth some ear-time we think.

We have a new single from Van Pierszalowski aka Waters following on from his excellent debut album Out In The Light last year, If Only is another quality slice of psych-pop with added fuzz.

Download Waters – If Only mp3 (from If Only Single)

After a four year hiatus, Cat Power has a new album, Sun prepped for release. The first taste is an unusually catchy, but typically pithy Ruin.

The always good Adult Swim Single Series has kicked into gear for 2012, with 12 free tracks appearing at the rate of one each week. This summer, they’ll be giving us tracks from people like Wavves and Wye Oak, as well as this the first song of the series, from psych-poppers Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

The Lighthouse And The Whaler have a new album This Is An Adventure scheduled for release on 18th September. First taste comes in the shape of Venice and most appetising it is too.

Download The Lighthouse And The Whaler – Venice mp3 (from This Is An Adventure)

Amanda Jo Williams released her latest album The Bear Eats Me a couple of days ago. A wholly compelling mix of quirky, idiosyncratic, freak-folk style indie mixed with classic jukebox rockabilly numbers. We have already posted the title track and here is a second taste, the soulful and imaginative Hello Good Morning.

And lastly we have another track from retro-indie popsters Saint Motel’s forthcoming debut release Voyeur (out on 10th July). This is Benny Goodman, a genre-bending homage to the man himself.

New Singles Round Up.

Here are a few of the new singles that have come our way recently that are well worth a listen.

The Diamond Center are purveyors of very fine lush, shimmering neo-psychedelia. A new 7″, California / Bells will be out on the 13th March and you can listen to the woozy, pulsating goodness of the title track here.

Next up, and while a touch more raucous, Bear Driver are in a somewhat similar vein with their brilliant new single Big Love, which is a freewheeling nod to past love and teeters precariously atop a monster wash of Dinosaur Jr guitar fuzz….Self proclaimed sunny slacker pop, it is a perfect description. Out on March 26th.

A short while ago we posted a superb track from London punks Zulu’s forthcoming debut cassette release Way Of The Zulu. This is another: Bloody And Rare. We’ve ordered our copy – get yours here.

Roomrunner would make good roommates for Zulu. This is their pulverising title track from new EP Super Vague, which is out on May 15th. Download it here.

In contrast to our first four offerings, The Family Machine provide a complete contrast with their gently pastoral new single Quiet As A Mouse. They are local to us and another example of Oxford’s brilliant local music scene. Watch it, then download it.

The Lighthouse And The Whaler have their own sweet line in melodic folk-pop and have announced a new track Burst Apart from upcoming EP Pioneers to coincide with their performances at SxSW.

a

We featured London five piece Good Dangers in our recent video round up, and this is new single DFYF, a perfect example of energetic indie-pop bursting with hooks that recalls The Headlights in their pomp. There’s some sound advice to be had in the lyrics too…

a

Broken Hands are a new band to us, but if second single Sorrow is anything to go by then that won’t be the case for long. It channels the best of classic rock in a way that is reminiscent of other MM faces Henry’s Funeral Shoe or Tweak Bird and even, dare whisper it, White Denim. Dust the air guitar off and shake those locks…

a

Lastly we have new Glasgow band Quickbeam who release debut single Seven Hundred Birds on April 9th. It is mournful, majestic and orchestral all at once and tugs at the heartstrings with an insistence and fragile beauty that is impossible to resist.
