New Salesman Single

We’ve been long standing advocates of Salesman’s and so are delighted to offer you their latest single Horn for download. Released a couple of days ago it is built on a mantra and will appear on their summer release Escalante. For those who don’t know (and we didn’t) Escalante is in southern Utah – it’s the staircase the moon climbs every night. The horn in question is half the crescent moon among other things.

The song is every bit as fitting, and as good, as that description imagines it should be – wistful, atmospheric and poignant in equal measure.

Catch them at SXSW @ 9pm on Wednesday 13th March at Ten Oak, 409 Colorado Street. You can see our other Salesman posts here.

Distorted and dishevelled Americana with solitary slow wind and sparse picking.

Download Efren – The Woods And The Wild mp3 (from Write A New Song)
Guitars throw out crunchy muscular riffs, drums pound and gruff vocals spit and snarl over the top of it all – a maelstrom of sonic destruction.

Speedy Ortiz – Silver Spring
Another fine example of their infectious and intelligent songwriting craft, a hook-laden, lyrically sharp slice of twitchy indie rock

a

Download The Chorderoys – No Prayin Man mp3 (from No Man’s Land)
Twangy, upbeat Country rock with a pounding rhythm and muscular guitar lines.

The Great American Desert – Carson City
Exquisite, compelling songs made for a campfire; made for a backporch and a bottle of whiskey; and made for the long, dark nights when no one but you seems awake in the world.

a

Ned Collette & Wirewalker – Long You Lie
Mix of experimental pop songwriting, musique concrete and dark folky soundscapes.

a

Catchy-as-hell junkyard folk-blues. Another contender for song of the month!

Download Rah Rah – Little Poems mp3 (from Little Poems 7″)
Dwells in the heavy complexity of relationships and being “poor, drunk and scared of being alone” told through a poetically skewed lens of life on the road, playing in a band.

Download Salesman – Ella mp3 (from Wasp EP)
Off kilter, somewhat warped take on Americana and desert country folk flavoured with a healthy dollop of psychedelia.

Download Waters – If Only mp3 (from If Only Single)
Another quality slice of psych-pop with added fuzz.

Download Fires – Blackout mp3 (from Echo Sounds EP)
Meaty, angular riffs, occasional discordant tones, and a nihilistic world view.

Download Ivan & Alyosha – All The Times We Had mp3 (from All The Times We Had)
Beautifully simple and melodic and tells a bittersweet tale of goodbye.

Screen Gems – Jazz Records
Just under two minutes of the best, catchiest, woozy, off-kilter, hazy, messed up screwball psych-pop that we’ve heard all year

a

Download Zachary CaleLove Everlasting mp3 (from Love Everlasting 7″)
Top notch fare from folky singer-songwriter.

Savaging Spires – Tell Me
Fine example of their Wicker-Man style pagan-folk stylings and eerie electronic collages.

a

Suburban Living – Float In Clouds
Supremely assured mix of lo-fi garage riffs and shimmering dream pop which combine to produce an infectiously catchy summery track.

a

O’Captain – Eyes Like Anchors
Starts with a sweetly catchy guitar strum and some heartfelt harmonies before throwing off the shackles two thirds of the way through and galloping full pelt to the end of the song.

a

Coastal – Black Stars / Flash Cars
A deceptively vicious tale referencing Jeremy Kyle, Starbucks and handfuls of pills amongst other things.

a

Download Daughn Gibson – In The Beginning mp3 (from All Hell)
Could be a classic down-on-their-luck country, could be creepy southern gothic, could be dark folk, but then there are the looped, eerie electronics and over it all is a rich baritone croon every bit the equal of Lee Hazlewood or Nick Cave.

Download Ormonde – Can’t Imagine mp3 (from Machine)
As devastating as it is gentle – warm, organic, glistening in half-light and shadow, slowly revealing highlight after highlight.

Download The Boombox Hearts – 100 (The Latest Flame) mp3 (from 100 (The Latest Flame) single)
Very much pop the 60s way with some noisy indie-style guitars (and yes, the title’s a reference to Elvis!).

And to finish off we have a new track from Tilly And The Wall, the stomping first single from their new album is called Love Riot, some glam tinged rock-pop from Foxygen with Waitin’ 4 U and Total Slacker’s cover of Oblivion by Grimes. Lastly we have the title track from Australian indie-darlings Skipping Girl Vinegar’s Chase The Sun EP, it is hi-fi swagger meets low-fi sway carving out their own heart warming, hobo-pop aesthetic.

New EP From Salesman.

Salesman have released a new EP this week titled Wasp, containing six more tracks of their off kilter, somewhat warped take on Americana and desert country folk flavoured with a healthy dollop of psychedelia and no little experimentation.

The songs are provocative, nothing if not a little unsettling, and are guaranteed to push listeners a little out of their comfort zones. All in a good way you understand for Salesman are a restless band, unwilling to be restrained or constrained and it reflects in the diversity and imagination present and straining at the leash in every track.

Watch the video for Taos Hum and download the affecting closing track Ella below. You can buy from their Bandcamp page here.

The Salesman & Wayne Kramer of MC5's Daytrotter Session. A while back we posted about a wonderful 7″ single by a band called Salesman. Devin James Fry of the band has been back in touch to tell us about a recent Daytrotter session with the legendary Wayne Kramer of MC5. More importantly it also concerns a brilliant charity Jail Guitar Doors which our own bard of Barking, Billy Bragg has been heavily involved in setting up, and which of course has connections with our favourite band ever…The Clash who, to complete the circle, mention Wayne in their song of the same name.

It is perhaps best to use Devin’s own words to explain, “I reached out to Wayne last spring about throwing a benefit for his charity Jail Guitar Doors. Their mission is to put instruments into the hands of prisoners, encouraging music as a rehabilitative outlet. The fact being that over 95% of all people incarcerated will one day go free, and this country’s flawed prison system does all it can to produce citizens without passion, meaning, or creativity in their lives. These people will be our neighbors someday. Jail Guitar Doors gives them music and shows them another way.

I’m passionate about this cause because of where I grew up. Canon City, CO and its neighbor Florence are home to thirteen federal, state, and local prisons including a SuperMax facility, one of the most abhorrent means of reducing personal freedoms this country has devised. In a prison town you see people on both sides of the bars ruined — people I grew up with are guards and wardens now, and it’s ruined some of their lives, marked them with cruelty and withered their innate compassion. Those incarcerated are even worse off. The entire system is dehumanizing and destructive.

Wayne’s stature and skill as a guitarist makes him a legend, but his passionate humanity makes him my hero.

Please keep this meaning in mind while listening to us do what we love to do. We had a lot of fun together that day.

You can sign up to Daytrotter for a paltry $2 per month to access this and many other great sessions. You can find out more about Jail Guitar Doors here.

Want a mosh-pit meltdown in your front room? Be our guest with this three and a half minute junkyard gem.

Download Howling OwlsMood Ring mp3 (Demo)

Our favourite discovery of 2010. This one is a little quicker, more staccato, less downbeat, but lyrically still overwhelmed with regret and a barely containable bitterness.

Download Dr. DogNobody Knows Who You Are mp3 (from Tour 7”)

More ramshackle countrified goodness.

Download Giant SandFields Of Green mp3 (from Blurry Blue Mountain)

A gentle acoustic lament that Howe Gelb does better than just about anyone else.

Download Silver SwansAnyone’s Ghost mp3 (National Cover)

Icy synths and a gorgeous, breathy vocal to send shivers down the spine.

Genuine home-made indie folk in the tradition of anti-folk if you know what we mean.

Superb, metronomic cover of Dylan.

Download GenerationalsTrust mp3 (from Trust EP)

Shimmering hooks, girl-group choruses, and late-summer breeziness.

Fuzzed up, reverb ridden, garage pop of the most infectious kind.

Download Kurt VileIn My Time mp3 (from In My Time)

Distorted prog-folk from forthcoming album.

Download PaleoThe King James Fakebook mp3 (from A View Of The Sky)

Calls on the spirits of Guthrie, Kerouac and other hipsters of old and simply and easily transports the listener through melodic landscapes unique, immediate, emotive, playful, and filled with longing.

Download Tapes ‘n TapesFreak Out mp3 (from Outside)

A frenetic romp that is catchier than just about anything we’ve heard so far this month.

Download Coma CinemaHell mp3 (from Blue Suicide)

A wonderfully aching and melancholic snapshot of genuine heartbreak.

Download The Asteroid #4Ignition Slated For Eight mp3 (from Hail To The Clear Figurines)

Hypnotic hybrid of several different genres filtered through the kaleidoscope of all things psych, krautrock, shoegaze, folk and even 70s ‘cosmic’ country-rock.

And some new ones for you too. First up Heartbreaker by Girls from their forthcoming new release Broken Dreams Club, the Crystal Castles get all Cured up with Robert Smith guesting and lastly Jordan Reyne’s wonderfully dark, industrial folk-noir from her album How The Dead Live.

Download Girls – Heartbreaker mp3 (from Broken Dreams Club)

Download Crystal Castles (featuring Robert Smith) – Not In Love mp3 (from Not In Love)

Download Jordan Reyne – The Proximity Of Death (Blue-Eyed Boy) mp3 (from How The Dead Live) Despite being sent this song by the PR company and asked to post it, some fuckwit is now alleging infringement of copyright and has had the song removed – we can’t do anything about this, but posted in good faith based on an authorisation that it was OK to offer for free download. Clearly a case of right hand and left hand and arseholes.

When a song arrives that is described as “It’s the desert-rock murder ballad of a dancing girl and her two boyfriends at a strip club called Deja Vu Showgirls in Colorado Springs, CO, near where I grew up”, I cannot imagine a song I would want to hear more.

The song, So Much Faster, is by a band called Salesman. It is the previously unreleased b-side to a forthcoming 7″ release called Red Jug Wine Lover. Playing their own potent and malevolent take on dusty blues and rock, it sounds a bit like Nick Cave’s more twisted, sicker twin and that is a very good thing indeed.

And then there is the cover art – just about as good as anything we’ve seen this year.

All in all it adds up to a pretty strong recommendation. In fact, it is for songs like this that we started the blog, might we say “Sold”.
