Round Up Time Again

It’s been a while since we’ve succumbed to the anxieties of our overwhelming in-box, but succumb we have. So, here is a too short and not sweet enough collection of new tunes of varying shapes and sizes that deserve some attention from you. Consider it the digital equivalent of crate digging…

Paperhaus released its alt-country styled self-titled EP in 2011, and will release its second effort, an EP entitled Lo Hi Lo on May 28th and it reflects the more pop side of Paperhaus’ psychedelic music. Grab yourself Helicopter from it.

.

The latest release from MM regulars, garage-punks Speedy Ortiz, is called Ka-Prow!. Listen below together with its equally infectious b-side Hexxy.

.

About a month ago we posted about the new Sonny & The Sunsets long player Antenna to the Afterworld. Here is a second taste from it in the shape of a tale of dying android lovers in the street, Green Blood.

.

Denver’s School Knights has spent the last few years playing shows with the likes of The Black Lips, King Tuff, Cloud Nothings, Ty Segall, Vivian Girls, Woods, METZ, Porcelain Raft, Japanther and more evolving into something much more than just a lo-fi garage band. School Knights has become an amalgam of harshness and beauty… a blend of riffs, harmonies, textures, and noise. Check out Chairs: Repurposed and visit their Bandcamp page here to grab full length Lethargy.

.

Cherokee Red recently released their eponymous debut album a few days ago. With a sound varying between woozy dream pop, eerie folk, and beyond, it is a captivating and sometimes ghostly listen. Try Vaya Con Dios.

.

Kent raised five-piece Story Books release their debut EP the four track Too Much A Hunter, through Communion next week. This is the beautiful Simple Kids.

.

El Cantador began with introspective folk ballads on their 2007 EP Orange, moved on to Americana tinged rock on 2008’s The Ground EP and expanded their sonic palette still further on 2011’s Fools For Light full-length. Their latest release, an EP titled Translation Wave is a cinematic, intimate collection of songs that hum with a warmth and rawness akin to some of those older, classic albums you might find in your local record bin.

.

Clap for Daylight is a 4-piece indie rock band with a keen sense of melody reminiscent of Death Cab for Cutie and Jeff Buckley, while subtle textures and classic guitar crunch round out the sound. They have recently completed new album Fire Escape, have a listen to One And The Same.

.

Half Hour Hotel are an indie rock band from Brighton with a big, full sound and who have a new double A-side single Run From Sirens / Another Life out now.

.

Singer-songwriter Amy Blaschke has a new album, Desert Varnish which heralds a return to her ethereal vocal roots and has a collection of songs as beautiful as they are restless. It is sparse, confessional stuff, and singularly lovely.

.

Finally, an artist known for his haunting melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, Jeremy Squires poetically deals with his personal struggles with mental illness throughout his songs and albums. His latest EP, Central Nervous Station was self-released in January and will be followed-up with a new full-length album, When Will You Go. In the meantime he has released a new single Ghostlike which is available, along with the rest of his back catalogue, from his Bandcamp page here.

Sonny & The Sunsets

The murder of a close friend of the band led Sonny Smith to think a lot about death and life after death. Shortly after, a visit to a medium brought Smith into contact with another friend who had died. It was this encounter with the afterworld that inspired many of the lyrics on Sonny & the Sunsets’ new record, Antenna to the Afterworld.

And the topics on the record? Death of course, the afterworld of course. But also android lovers dying in the streets bleeding green blood, homeless girls, dogs stranded here from other planets, femme fatales and more. And, with another radical shift of styles away from last year’s reflective Country record Longtime Companion, these wryly affecting tales are all told to a backdrop of new wave synths and post punk beats.

Listen to album opener, the aforementioned stranded alien dog tale, Dark Corners below.

Out on the 11th June digitally and in a run of 100 cassettes and 500 purple vinyl albums. Pre-order direct from Polyvinyl here.

Here are 33 of our favourite tracks from our May postings and 6 new songs too. No need to thank us.

Shines bright with an insanely hooky vocal and charged guitar riffs, taking cues from the sunny California coast yet retaining a suitably English feel.

Infectiously driven by a brilliant needling guitar refrain that is guaranteed to stick with you long after the song has finished.

Download Michael J Epstein Memorial Library – Faith In Free Part 1 mp3 (from Faith In Free EP)
Military stomp that comes across like a brilliantly vicious hybrid of Siouxsie & The Banshees and Sparks.

Download Sun Kil Moon – That Bird Has A Broken Wing mp3 (from Among The Leaves)
More starkly beautiful folk.

The Wind-Up Birds – Cross Country

a
Skilfully blends influences from folk to punk to create a restless, hybrid sound that has feet in many camps, but a home in none.

Beast make Bomb – Coney Island

a
Shimmering slice of indie rock played out against a backdrop of old-school punk attitude.

Dog Moon Howl – Blues Like A Hammer

a
Full on sleazy blues and desert rock – imagine if you will Mark Lanegan duelling with Howling Wolf

Download Hunx – Let Me In mp3 (from Hairdresser Blues)
Flamboyant 60s inspired doo-wop garage-pop.

Download Lord Buffalo – Cold Bones mp3 (from Lord Buffalo EP)

Download The Doc Marshalls – Here They Come mp3 (from Look Out, Compadre)
Crooked, shimmering folk; evocative and nostalgic.

Characterised by his trademark strum and those wonderful Dylanesqe pipes, but there is a darker twist and turn to the lyrics than we’ve been used to.

Download Hallelujah The Hills – Hungry Ghost Extraordinaire mp3 (from No One Knows What Happens Next)
Wholly absorbing and lyrically scalpel sharp track.

Download Duquette Johnston & The Rebel Kings – Roll Baby Roll mp3 (from Communicating Vessels 7″ Series)

Mix of country balladry and spit ‘n’ snarl punk rock that is a little like Tom Waits fronting the Mekons.

Download Jaill –  Waste A Lot Of Things mp3 (from Traps)
Their signature slack yet tightly wound musical style and self-deprecating humor retains all its charm.

Download The Virgins – Venus In Chains mp3 (from Venus In Chains single)
Charmingly nonchalant slab of garage inspired rock oozing with glam undertones.

Download Stagnant Pools – Dead Sailor mp3 (from Temporary Room)
Heavy, distorted, squally and reverb heavy, pierced with shafts of melody; would probably be prime candidates to soundtrack the end of the world.

Download The Shrouded Strangers – Drinking The Spider Silk mp3 (from Lost Forever)
Masterclass in whiskey-soaked hillbilly stompers, fuzzed-up psych freak outs, and white-noise wigouts.

Download Rainer & Calexico – Be Prepared mp3 (from The Inner Flame: A Tribute To Rainer Ptacek)
Achingly gorgeous dusty Arizona blues and moanas elegant and moving as anything you’ll hear for a long, long time.

Red Cosmos – England’s Glory

a
Tale of a mother visited in the middle of the night by the pale spectre of her son dying alone, somewhere far away on a battlefield.

Download Grave Babies – Nightmare mp3 (from Gothdammit EP)
Gloomy, drone-filled Goth that manages to keep its tongue firmly in its cheek.

And here are a few new ones to round off your day and set you up for the weekend nicely. First is another taste from the forthcoming Sonny & The Sunsets album, Longtime Companion in the shape of Be The Void. We also have two tracks from our new favourite band, Broken Water: Underground and Drown are good enough to strip the paint from the walls and come from just released new album Tempest.

We have the melodic indie pop dusted with notes of surf rock from Scotland’s The Imagineers and their track The Legend Of John The Terror (Notorious) and Home Groan, a new taste from Dent May’s much anticipated new album. Finally, we have a welcome reissue of some early Silver Jews recordings by Drag City Records to celebrate, from it comes this track Secret Knowledge of Back Roads.

Don’t forget to check all our previous monthly Best Of mixes in the sidebar too.

Streaming Round Up.

Here are a few tasty streams for you to hit the play button on, and a couple to download too.

First, some new blissed-out, hypnotic psychedelia from White Fence who have a new three track single out titled Green Balloon via Sexbeat Records in Europe – limited to 500 vinyl copies, and we’ve just pre-ordered one of them…

a

Next up is the altogether more aggressive and fractured punk beats of Death Grips. I’ve Seen Footage is another taste of critically acclaimed new album The Money Store which is released today.

a

Much like Clockwork Era who create a bone-shaking noise all of their own, one that spits out bile through disillusioned post-punk sensibilities and jagged riff-laden buzz-saw guitars, crunching drums and incessant repetitive mantra-like vocals.  War, social commentary, lies and paranoia are all delivered with vitriol, resentment and anger. This is the title track from new EP Fear Inside, released yesterday. Marvellous!

a

Los Angeles quartet Henry Clay People will release their new album Twenty-Five for the Rest of Our Lives on June 26th via TBD Records. A thrilling and sweaty thirty minutes of teenage restlessness, quarter-life malaise, and adult resignation. The new album sees not only the return of the band’s original line up, but the band rediscovering and redefining their punky roots, allowing them to craft their most urgent, bratty, and melancholic record to date. Have a listen to the title track.

a

Resurrecting the licks and the gravely tones of America’s garage rock scene and uniting it with English raw appeal and psychedelic undertones, Black Manila are a new name to us, but one we’re liking a lot. They have an excellent new single Fiasco coming out on 30th April which you can listen to below and why not also download yourself a copy of Hazy Daze too.

a

We posted about upstart rockers Broken Hands recently and If You Need To Lie, released on the 28th of May on 7″ & download, is their new single.

a

Changing pace with the welcome return of Sonny & The Sunsets. This is Pretend You Love Me, a wonderfully sprawling country-tinged taster track of psych-pop from new album Longtime Companion.

a

Indie-folk and pop princess Fiona Apple has a new album due in mid-June. It is the extremely lengthily titled The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw, And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do and this track will be the first single from it, called Every Single Night.

a

With a strong contender for artwork of the year so far, Black Seas are a mysterious band from South London with an impressively operatic and extravagant pop sound – take a listen to the aptly titled Trembling.

a

And lastly, Fractures mine the same rich seam of indie rock as Oasis did, but thankfully without the ego and bluster – the result is the rather good debut single Ride.
