Festive Fayre (14): Summer Camp

Posted: December 14, 2015 in Indie, Music, Pop, Rock

Summer Camp have released a Christmas EP, a five track Christmas special, featuring original Christmas themed songs and covers of classics Last Christmas and Christmas Wrapping.

Here is the video for new seasonal favourite I Don’t Wanna Wait Til Christmas

Although we now have a regular Video of the Day post on Mad Mackerel, we still can’t keep up with all that we’re being sent and here are a few more of the videos we would like to have featured well before now.

Face-melting UK four piece Trails are making quite a name and quite a noise for themselves. Latest video is for new track Is My Purple Your Purple?, which they are also giving away as a free download.

Download Trails – Is My Purple Your Purple? mp3 (from Is My Purple Your Purple)

Keston Cobblers’ Club release their debut album One, For Words on 27th August. This is the video for For Words, a sweetly harmonious, banjo led folk song. You can also download it below.

Download Keston Cobblers’ Club – For Words mp3 (from One, For Words)

Palpable is the beautiful new single from the folky I Am Oak which is a rich and dynamic taster from forthcoming album Nowhere or Tammensaari. The video is equally easy on the eye.

Fourth generation Albertan rancher and songwriter Corb Lund has just completed a playful video for his new single Gettin’ Down on the Mountain, the first taster from Cabin Fever (out on New West on the 14th August), envisioning an apocalypse coming “when the oil stops, everything stops.”

Here is Bleached playing street session versions of Dazed and Searching Through The Past for They Shoot Music in Barcelona during the Primavera Sound Festival.

South London’s quirky indie-popsters La Shark are currently creating quite a buzz for themselves and new single Mr Modern Man comes with a characteristically wry video.

The debut release from Brooklyn four-piece Fast Years is garage rock and surf pop that feeds the soul. With influences ranging from The Sonics to The Exploding Hearts and The Vaccines, Young Heart is the single taken from their forthcoming debut EP Women.

And while we’re on the topic of garage rock, here is the King Tuff video for Bad Thing.

Download King Tuff – Bad Thing mp3 (from King Tuff)

Call The Doctor are amassing a significant amount of critical praise for their hi-energy pop songs with Sid Vicious attitude. Closer To Home is their latest single.

Singer songwriter David Reynolds moved to Alaska in search of adventure and music. In Ketchikan, he developed his craft as a commercial fisherman by day and musician by night. His third release, the Evergreen EP, dropped on June 4. On Memorial Day, Reynolds released a music video for the first single from the EP, a song dedicated to active duty and veteran troops titled In Full Uniform.

Mind Fish have made a fun video for Can’t Control At All, which, in the words of the band, “It’s about being cool and getting the girl.”

British indie darlings Summer Camp have a new EP called Always due for release next week. This is the title track.

And lastly we have this from Danish artist Emil Friis, it is a little piece of video noir, if you will, and a killer song too!

Here we are again. A mix of the best tracks we posted in February and a few new ones too. Twenty seven cracking songs to immerse yourself in!

Download O’Death – Bugs mp3 (from Outside)

Echoes of their ramshackle and punkish best, but this time it is cocooned in something more subtle and thoughtful too.

Download The Whalers – That Rabbit mp3 (from How The Ship Goes Down)

Playing a wonderfully straightforward blend of thudding, bass-heavy rock that makes us think of QotSA melded with the Black Angels and then given some 60s style reverb treatment.

Download Middle Brother – Me Me Me mp3 (from Middle Brother)

Classic rootsy Americana show indie supergroup can live up to the hype.

Download The Barettas – Touche mp3 (from Touche 7″)

An energy filled, rough edged pop number – like bubblegum wrapped around a six inch nail.

Download Creepoid – Grave Blanket mp3 (from Horse Heaven)

Top quality psych-rock and creeping reverb laden malevolence.

Download The Paperhead – Back To Those Days mp3 (from The Paperhead)

Shimmering, orchestrated pop layers, eastern influence and the groovy instrumentals of a classic British Psych record.

Download Hunters – Deadbeat mp3 (from Hunters / Dead Wife split 7″)

The tribal beat and brilliant riff is a perfect combination of the heavy and the accessible. Imagine The Vaselines making music with The Ruts on a chaotic acid binge.

Download Moon Duo – Mazes mp3 (from Mazes)

A must for any fans of psychedelia, drone-rock, stoner riffage or anything similar.

Download Left Lane Cruiser – Giving Tree mp3 (from Junkyard Speed Ball)

An effortless mix of southern-fried blues, garage, and brutal punk riffs into one glorious whiskey and gasoline soaked whole.

Download Trent Fox & The Tenants – Mess Around mp3 (from Mess Around EP)

Garage infused rock n roll with added swagger and a whole bunch of attitude.

Download Wolf Ram Heart – Viewgirls mp3 (from Betrayal of Hearts)

Ominous and brooding – a perfect example of dark hearted, pop psychedelia.

Download Jones Street Station – The Understanding mp3

A wonderful sense of melody and intricate rhythms played with a joyous abandon and sense of fun.

Download The Raveonettes – Forget That You’re Young mp3 (from Raven In The Grave)

Ghostly synths and chillingly beautiful riffs that leave you feeling simultaneously unsettled and enchanted.

Download Slug Guts – Hangin’ In The Pisser mp3 (from Howlin’ Gang)

Seething primal punk-blues holler with a twisted take on everything from goth to garage.

Download Brother Gruesome – Tubes mp3 (from For The Morphine Makes You Comfortable 7″)

Mixing a sound that has evolved from their dark folk roots with a full on Sabbath-esque interlude.

Download J Mascis – Not Enough mp3 (from Several Shades Of Why)

Acoustically tinged pop par excellence.

Download Hunx & His Punx – Lovers Lane mp3 (from Too Young To Be In Love)

Tongue-in-cheek homage to the Shangri-Las, doo-wop, bubblegum pop, beach cruising and prom night teenage angst and finishes with the obligatory spoken word denouement – this time with flamboyantly camp overtones.

Download Bored Man Overboard – Abigail mp3 (from Rogue)

Vibrant, dark and reserved, they tell stories about forgotten people, of resignation and subdued wine buzzes. The music sounds like it has been dragged screaming from being immersed in six months of darkness – a wonderful antidote to the empty pop fluff that abounds.

Download Wavves – Horse Shoes mp3

His finest moment since So Bored…?

Download Fosdyk Well – First Gravity mp3 (from Slumber And Stark Lots)

Off-kilter acoustic strum and a queasy feel combine in this brilliantly disorientating mix of uneasy folk and ambient experiment

Download Silver Shampoo – Streaks Of Satan mp3 (from Higher & Higher)

Top quality fuzzed out, reverbed up, psychotic blast of glamorous garage rock.

Download The Heavenly States – Model Son mp3 (from Oui Camera Oui EP)

A foot-stomper with added rasp, rhythm and groove.

And to finish off we have two excellent covers for you, Loch Lomond’s reverential take on a Fleetwood Mac classic and Bat for Lashes tackling Depeche Mode, as well as the first tastes from new albums by Summer Camp and Julian Lynch, and finally a brand new song from folkies Romany Rye.

Download Loch Lomond – The Chain mp3 (Fleetwood Mac cover)

So ahead of our mammoth postings of end-of-year favourites: albums, tracks, covers, old songs heard for the first time in 2010 etc. etc. and posted by Mrs Mackerel, MM, Barry-Sean, Mr Popper, Dr Roddy, Polly Pocket et al here is a quick and dirty round-up of some of the new tunes, Christmas tunes, covers and other bits and pieces that have been doing the rounds.

Having already posted two covers yesterday by the Handsome Family and Gospel Claws, we’ll keep the theme going strong today. So enjoy Neon Indian and his cover of T-Rex’s classic glam rocker Children of the Revolution, folk singer Benjamin Francis Leftwich’s version of Arcade Fire’s Rebellion, Clare Maguire’s hauntingly beautiful and mesmerising version of Antony’s Hope There’s Someone, and the very hip Golden Filter take on Psychic TV’s disturbing 1983 seasonal offering White Nights.

We also have the lo-fi indie goodness of Summer Camp covering the 80s band The Waitresses, and some festive, fragile folk from Greater Pacific.

Download all below, but also take some time to check these out.

Ace oddball indie label the Jezus Factory have released this last minute charity single from Lil’ Lost Lou with all profits going to Shelter From The Storm (Reg Charity 1125575)

So please do dig deep and help someone get a bed and some food this Christmas by buying this single… It’s pretty easy to end up on your uppers, I’m not too far from it myself……….. also this is a damn fine song and if you don’t believe us have a listen! You can buy it here.

And lastly The Whites of our Eyes is the 7 minute long, improvised result of the first collaboration between Oxford / London kraut-jazz-drone experimentalists Braindead Collective (featuring members of Guillemots, The Epstein, Keyboard Choir and others), and the Scotland-via-Lancashire purveyor of lo-fi creaks and drones, Rob St.John.

Recorded on the coldest day of a freezing British winter in Oxford’s oldest church – St.Michael’s on Cornmarket St – by microphones strategically strewn from pews and rafters, it captures the sound of a band reshaping and remaking the song in response to each other’s improvisations. The result is a piece that teeters between a John Martyn or Smog-esq melody and the atonality and doomy drones of a Velvet Underground or Earth track.  Treading this line for 7 minutes, the song emerges refreshed on the repeated refrain of “You know I never came down from that tree”, backed by a chorus of voices echoing ever quieter into the icily empty church.

The single will be released on a pay-what-you-can basis, with all proceeds going to the homeless charity Shelter. Click here to download your copy.

We were idly watching the highlights of the Reading and Leeds festivals on Friday night, drifting in and out as you do, until our attention was well and truly grabbed by Summer Camp playing an acoustic version of a track called Ghost Train.

It was wonderful and a bit more research revealed all the blogger-buzz they have generated for themselves. So we freely admit we’re behind the times with this one, but if that’s you too, then catch up now with these two examples from their shambling, languid and really rather captivating Young EP.

Visit their MySpace here.
