Wild Leaves - Hello Sunlight EP

Hello Sunlight is the newest release from Brooklyn psych-folk band, Wild Leaves. This collection of four songs is a follow-up to last year’s excellent debut, Wind & Rain.

Here, the band’s characteristic sun-drenched harmonies and kaleidoscopic guitar lines take centre stage, ringing out with a sense of urgency. The soaring harmonies, assertive rhythm section, and shimmering electric guitars have understandably drawn comparisons to the west coast sounds of The Byrds, CSNY, and Jefferson Airplane.

Try on a couple of tunes for size, Forever Moonlight and wonderful closing track Black River.

Hello Sunlight is out on the 1st October.

New EP From Wild Leaves

The hazy, washed out Americana of Wild Leaves was one of our favourite discoveries of 2012 with their demo release of Sister. Now they have a debut EP coming out on the 26th March titled Wind And Rain, and the lead track from it is To Be Free. It builds on all the promise that Sister showed, and simply put, it is absolutely brilliant. If you have Low Anthem or Phosphorescent records in your collection, you will find much to love here we promise you.

As well as being a free download from their Bandcamp page (where you can also order the 12″ vinyl), the band have directed a video for the track, which features archival footage of 60’s Homesteader, Dick Proenneke, who retired to the remote region of Twin Lakes, Alaska on May 21, 1968. There, he built a cabin by hand using only materials available on his land. He would live in that cabin for the next 30 years, only returning to the lower 48 to occasionally visit family.

Can’t recommend this one highly enough.

Beautiful slice of chamber-folk

a

Download Grassfight – Nassau mp3 (from Icon EP 2)

Introducing...The Wild Leaves.

This post is about the single biggest reason we blog – for that wonderful moment when you get a discovery of a new band.

A new band like Wild Leaves.

The band’s e-mail simply said, “We are 5 friends who moved to Brooklyn, from the midwest. That distance is recalled in our songs. Each one, a look back at what we left behind. The sound is something nostalgic, something with history – like a record rediscovered in your attic. The hazy melodies and washed-out reverb recall memories not yet lost.

The tracks, Sister and Drifter were recorded this past winter in whatever kitchen, bedroom, or living room we could set up a mic in. They are homemade, handmade, with love from Wild Leaves.”

Both tracks are utterly wonderful. Evocative and poignant, the notes sweetly swirling around the room like dust mites in the sunlight. Both songs have a timeless quality – as though the stories they tell and the gorgeous melodies they offer could have been hummed on back porches for decades gone by.

Take me down to the river
let the current wash me over
Tell my mother that I miss her
Tell my father I’ve gone missing

Treat yourself to both below and keep your ears peeled for more from Wild Leaves.
