best of the weekHaving spent a mighty fine week soaking up the sunshine in Crete we are feeling pretty good about life. And if that wasn’t enough here are ten of the best of the week’s new releases (as judged by us of course).

They Include the very welcome return of fire and brimstone gothic folkies Wovenhand and Argentinian garage-posters Las Kellies, cracking tracks from Bueno and Okkervil River, a pretty sweet cover from the Devil Makes Three, and plenty more besides.

Soak it up…

  1. The Devil Makes Three – Champagne and Reefer  (Muddy Waters cover)
  2. Bueno – Blown Out
  3. Wovenhand – Come Brave
  4. Billie Marten – Lionhearted
  5. Las Kellies – Summer Breeze
  6. Vomitface – Dramamine
  7. JEFF The Brotherhood – Idiot
  8. Raveonettes – Where Are You Wild Horses?
  9. Pfarmers – Red Vermin
  10. Okkervil River – The Industry

New album from Wovenhand

We’ve long had a soft spot for David Eugene Edwards and his Wovenhand moniker, rising as it did from the ashes of the highly influential, doom laden Gothic country of 16 Horsepower. New album, their fifth long player, The Threshingfloor, was officially released this week. As with all previous Wovenhand releases, the cover art is stunning.

As might be expected, it is an appropriately theatrical album with all the usual Wovenhand elements present and correct. Beneath a twisted spaghetti western feel, melodrama drips from each and every track and calls to mind everything from Nick Cave to Scott Walker to Devotchka. Try the scorched earth fuzz and fury of His Rest to get a taste for the album.
