Thankfully, this Christmas has seen some genuinely good festive tunes released. Tunes that would stand up to scrutiny at any time of the year – we’ve posted a good number: Withered Hand, Caitlin Rose, Evil Hand, and the superb Diamond Rugs amongst others.

And this most definitely is another – from the gently downtempo and hypnotic opening and scalpel sharp lyrics,

“Cheap gold drips from dressed up trees,

cheap gold lines the salted streets”

to later on, “take the steamed up taxi home,

and suck a hip flask to stay warm”

It is a tune that exposes the tawdry, tarnished side of Christmas without ever being mawkish, and does it as well as any we’ve heard for a long time. Marvellous.
