We’ve taken our sweet time getting round to listening to the new single Businessman’s Guide To Witchcraft by Somerset’s Waves of Fury, but as soon as we did we knew we’d be sharing it far and wide.
It is the first track to see the light of day from their forthcoming self-titled long player and it is an unholy alliance of scowling, snarling vocals, sleazy guitar licks, Motown horns, and high octane percussion. It draws on everything from Muddy Waters to Spiritualized and from Thee Oh Sees to Otis Redding as well as the writings of Poe, James Lee Burke and Jim Thompson. Contemporary rock & soul?
Waves Of Fury cut their teeth touring the southern States of America and were the first British act to be signed by one of our favourite labels, Alive Naturalsound (Black Keys/Brian Olive/Buffalo Killers/Lee Bains III). They combine gothic imagery with accessible tunes, humour and raw, full-on energy.
Have a listen and to the equally thrilling b-side Papa Sam.
