Introducing >>> Port Isla

We got this through from Norwich’s Port Isla described simply as “anthemic folk for lonely castaways“. And, on the evidence of the video for current single Sinking Ship, that is exactly what they deliver. Watch it, and pick it up as a completely free download from the band’s website here. a We also have a couple of other tracks you can download from their Soundcloud below. Mad Mackerel Recommends…Big Harp

We’re loving the pained apathy of this track, You Can’t Save ‘Em All from Big Harp’s forthcoming sophomore album Chain Letters, which is due early next year via Saddle Creek. For this record, the duo of Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney is joined by their friend John Voris on drums. The album moves away from the rustic, pastoral sound of their debut White Hat, and … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends…Big Harp

New Album From The Douglas Firs

Sometimes a band says all there needs to be said about a new release when they describe the inspiration for it, and in common with the latest album from another uniquely visioned indie fave Darren Hayman, the Douglas Firs new record, The Furious Sound, is loosely based around the East Lothian witch trials of 1590. Seventy persons, mainly women, were tortured, tried and burned for their supposed … Continue reading New Album From The Douglas Firs

MM Shorts 267: The Dirty Nil

Little Metal baby Fist is the latest single from The Dirty Nil. Available for a pay what you want deal on their Bandcamp. By way of explanation, The Dirty Nil recording experience is dependent on beer, blood, broken bones, broken instruments, broken ears, inescapable loudness, screaming, unresolved girl problems, exposed wiring, no pants, no shoes, making their producer drink more than he wants to, a … Continue reading MM Shorts 267: The Dirty Nil

MM Shorts 266: Bottom Dollars

We first became switched on to Bottom Dollars when we downloaded their recent Daytrotter Session. In particular the near ten minute epic of Fall Into Arms, a southern-tinged indie rocker, which has one of the best, and most insistent, openings of any song we’ve heard all year. It is a nailed on, pedal-to-the-floor tune for the open road! A bit of further investigation revealed a … Continue reading MM Shorts 266: Bottom Dollars

Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday (16th November)

Full vocal recovery is now complete, much to everyone’s evident delight… Went gigging and giggling with Mr Nightshift last night to celebrate. We started off with a drink in a local Oxford hostelry that I hadn’t frequented since being thrown up against the wall outside by someone who wanted me to be “their girlfriend”. Should have just asked really. Or noted my then boyfriend waiting … Continue reading Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday (16th November)
