Ty Segall on Daytrotter

Ty Segall turned up on lots of the end of year ‘best of’ lists and it has meant we have gone back to his 2010 album Melted for another listen or two – and we’re glad we did. Not sure how we missed that gem in the first place… Anyway, he has also recorded a Daytrotter Session that features five brand new tracks. Check out … Continue reading Ty Segall on Daytrotter

MM’s Best of the Month: December

Despite all the ‘best of’ lists, the top tens/twenties/fifties/one hundreds etc. and all the Christmas songs too, there has still been a cracking amount of new releases in December as well. So lest you missed out, here is our monthly round-up of the best tunes we’ve posted in December and, as always, a couple of new ones too. That’s the New Year’s Eve mixtape sorted … Continue reading MM’s Best of the Month: December

Mad Mackerel’s 2010 Top Ten Series: No 9, Favourite New Artists

Now that we’ve had the top tens from all the Mad Mackerel contributors, we will give you a definitive overall top ten in a couple of days. Before that is our penultimate top ten list of the year – the favourite new bands and artists that have come our way in 2010 which was perhaps the hardest list of all to compile. Mad Mackerel’s Albums of the Year

So after much deliberation, head scratching, discussion, and more head scratching, we have MM’s favourite albums of 2010. And we choose our words very carefully here, because we would not presume them to be the best, only those that have given us the most pleasure and enjoyment, records that we have returned to again and again, and for whatever reason have captured a moment or … Continue reading Mad Mackerel’s Albums of the Year

Mad Mackerel Recommends…6 Day Bender

E’ville Fuzz arrives two-and-a-half years after 6 Day Bender’s self-titled debut. The title references the farmhouse in Earlysville, Virginia, where the band crafted the album’s thirteen songs, as well as the ‘fuzzier,’ more blues-oriented dimension the album explores. The band recorded the new project between bouts of touring, bankrolling the studio sessions with proceeds from the road. The result is a high-octane rock record with … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends…6 Day Bender

New Years Evil / The Black Tambourines split 7″

For some unfathomable reason we’ve been sat on this excellent split release between Exeter’s New Years Evil (like No Age covering The Wedding Present), and Falmouth’s The Black Tambourines (like The Black Lips if they came from Cornwall). It was released on 29th November as a 7″ single with 5 track digital EP along with zine and individual photo print from up and coming south … Continue reading New Years Evil / The Black Tambourines split 7″

The Babies ready debut album

Here at MM we like the Vivian Girls and we like The Woods, so a collaboration between Cassie of the former and Kevin of the latter under the moniker The Babies was always likely to find favour with us. Run Me Over, the rather charming, fuzzed up, doo-wop drenched opener comes from their forthcoming debut album out on February 11th next year. Makes you yearn … Continue reading The Babies ready debut album

New Video from The Streets On Fire

We’ve praised and posted a couple of times about Chicago’s garage rockers The Streets On Fire and their excellent album This Is Fancy.
