Firstly that is a great name. Conjures up an image of a stick-thin, ne’er-do-well in some dusty, forgotten border town drinking, stealing cars and dealing drugs. But then maybe that’s just us… Anyway, one of MM’s rules is the music should fit the band’s name and thankfully here we’re on to a winner. Speedy Ortiz are a western Massachusetts-based, female-fronted, guitar-heavy four piece. For reference points they … Continue reading Introducing >>> Speedy Ortiz
Seeing Brakes play to an ecstatic crowd at the End of the Road Festival was a highlight of our first visit there and so my interest was piqued when an email arrived with details of the new solo album from Thomas White for it is he who has played with aforesaid Brakes as well as Electric Soft Parade and one of Barry-Sean’s favourites, British Sea … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends…Thomas White
Fish on a Friday – there’s a novelty for me. Just a small dose of lightly grilled mackerel this week… So it is away I go to Wembley for a weekend of undoubtedly strenuous exercise by day (aerobics), followed by two evenings of hard drinking (take your pick really, but alcoholic I suspect). I expect that one will have an unduly detrimental effect on the … Continue reading Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday (9th March)

We were introduced to Monument Valley (aka London’s Ned Younger) towards the end of 2011 when we posted Round And Round from his EP Tongues. He will release his new single Your Cover Blown via Rug Records on April 23rd and while that remains a while off, we can promise you it will be worth the wait. In the meantime we can tide you over … Continue reading More From Monument Valley
A couple of weeks ago we posted Torches cover of Crushed Beaks Close-Ups, now as part of the split single release Crushed Beaks are returning the favour with their cover of Torches VTOO. This time the duo have replaced their usual full-on steam-hammer approach with slowly pounding drums and staccato guitar noise creating something akin to a sonic maelstrom – a post-apocalyptic bedlam if you … Continue reading Crushed Beaks Cover Torches VTOO
