Ryan Monroe of Band of Horses will release his debut album A Painting Of A Painting On Fire on May 22nd. Covering a spectrum from progressive rock to elaborate pop, via nods to country and even classical, the first taste is the sunny upbeat (in contrast to the title) Any Way, Shape Or Deformity that has more than an echo of ELO about it… Download Ryan Monroe – … Continue reading Solo Album From Ryan Monroe (Band of Horses)
Yesterday we posted a track from the brilliant Ray Wylie Hubbard’s Daytrotter session and he is involved in today’s post too, being co-producer on this recently released album of gritty, intoxicating one-man-blues by Lincoln Durham, The Shovel [vs] the Howling Bones. Equipped with old, makeshift 1950s amps, resonators, fiddles, harmonicas, tin can microphones, slides, stomp boards and you name it, he gives birth to a sound … Continue reading Introducing >>> Lincoln Durham
If you haven’t signed up to Daytrotter for a measly $2 a month then you are missing out on a whole host of recent gems from Sic Alps, Washed Out, Bombay Bicycle Club, Terry Malts and Kathleen Edwards amongst others. But none more so than the session on the 13th February from grizzled outlaw country genius Ray Wylie Hubbard. Amongst the four outstanding tracks was … Continue reading Ray Wylie Hubbard @ Daytrotter
Following on from our Friday mix yesterday, here are a few tunes to stream, listen to and investigate further should you feel the need. We think you probably will. First up is the new single, 17, from Young & Lost Club’s indie alt-rockers Being There. a Oxford’s latest buzzworthy band are The Black Hats – lots of energy, a definite pop edge, big chorus hooks, and … Continue reading Stream These…
This week, in sunny Charlbury, smallest sprat took a tumble down the rather steep Victorian stairs. Running to his rescue, I had, at that precise moment, chosen to gargle with some mouthwash. Cheeks bulging, I picked him up, caught the (cobwebbed) ironing board in danger of falling on him, then sprinted upstairs to expel said mouthwash. Sadly, I did this in such haste and with … Continue reading Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday (24th February)
We’re trying to juggle a few plates at the moment, so can’t do full justice to these tunes other than to say all are worth some of your time. The obvious answer was a straightforward Friday afternoon mix. After all there is absolutely no point in starting anything new in the office now, so download this mix, stick a complicated spreadsheet up on your screen … Continue reading Friday…Let’s Mix It Up
We have been fans of Gaoler’s Daughter from the very first time we heard their demo of Nine Pieces of Silk back at the start of 2010. Since then they’ve delivered a series of excellent EPs and singles in the shape of The Only Way To Travel, Alchemy, Rhyme & Treason and St. Peter. They have been back in touch to tell us about a … Continue reading Gaoler’s Daughter Return
Coke Weed were one of our favourite discoveries of 2011 – we described their free-to-download album Volume One as some of the most brilliantly off-kilter indie rock we had heard for a long, long time. From Velvets style chug to Johnny Cash rumble it was stuffed to the gills with more tunes and ideas than many bands manage in a career. Building on the deserved … Continue reading Coke Weed Prep Nice Dreams
On outstanding new track The Smell Of Pregnancy, Free Swim are inventive, experimental, manic, groovy, comedic and surreal and that’s just for starters. They expertly walk a fine line between art-rock swagger and avant-garde mayhem and joyfully channel the excesses of Zappa and Beefheart with a glam-rock undercurrent, suitably quirky British lyrical wordplay and perhaps even a hint of the Batman theme… Watch the similarly unorthodox and … Continue reading Introducing >>> Free Swim
