There has been a little burst of free samplers and downloads hit the web recently and some are very much worth a few moments of your time to check out and get hold of – after all what is there to lose apart from your e-mail privacy?

The album also includes custom album art and interview pieces with King Tuff and Mikal Cronin. You can grab that one just by clicking here.

Round Up Time Again - Part 2

Here is another collection of just some of the notable new tunes that have come our way recently…we’re still catching up, so expect some more posts like this over the next few days.

Kicking off with Nightingale Floors which will be the fifth album from indie duo Rogue Wave. This is the first taste from it, a mighty fine track titled College.

.

We also have another taste from the forthcoming Alex Bleeker & The Freaks album How Far Away. This is Leave On The Light.

.

Someone Else is the second single from Pure X’s forthcoming Crawling up the Stairs LP.

.

Mikal Cronin also has a new album due in May titled MKII. This is the first taste, the breezy Weight.

.

Lauren Mann & The Fairly Odd Folk release new album Over Land And Sea next month full of captivating folk-pop melodies. This is the title track.

.

Camperdown & Out effortlessy evoke the golden age of jangle guitar pop with their excellent debut single Down & Out from their forthcoming LP Couldn’t Be Better – imagine Lou Reed, Kevin Ayres and the GoBetweens jamming together..

.

We’ve featured the glam-rock garage stomp of the Burnt Ones previously on MM, and Fountain of Youth from new album You’ll Never Walk Alone mines that territory even deeper. Time to dig out some platforms and some flares.

.

Spectrals are another that have featured a few times on MM and new single Milky Way comes from new long player Sob Story and on this evidence could be the best thing he’s done to date.

.

Jonny Fritz (Corndawg as was) has also offered up another track from his new release Dad Country due next month. This is the droll Goodbye Summer with honkytonk fiddle providing a suitable backdrop to his wry observations of life on the road.

.

Lau Blues is the second single from Gun Outfit’s album Hard Coming Down, which is out next week and somehow sits somewhere between The Meat Puppets and Lucinda Williams.

.

We were a bit slow in discovering the ominous, humming post-punk of Spray Paint, but Yawn Factory is an absolutely top-notch single so just in case you’ve not heard it either…

.

We’re also really liking Shovels & Rope’s interpretation of the Springsteen classic Johnny 99, which is a new single out on Third Man Records.

.

Virginia Wing (another to feature previously on MM) create thrillingly crafted pop tunes that exist within that time honoured dialogue between the popular and the avant-garde. Their sound veers from the minimalist post punk of Young Marble Giants, to the twisted 60s psych bliss of Arthur Lee and Love and the Radiophonic Workshop inspired cinematic krautpop of Broadcast. The excellent Red Sails is due to be released via Critical Heights on 6 May.

.

Courtesy of the always wonderful Yankee Calling blog comes Riptide by Australia’s Vance Joy, it has echoes of The Tallest Man On Earth about it and certainly marks him out as one to most definitely keep an eye on.

.

We are longtime admirers of Hawk And Dove and on forthcoming debut album, This Yesterday Will Never End, the band mixes hauntingly beautiful ballads with thunderous stoner grooves to create a sound quite unlike anything else. Grab yourself Things We Lost So Far and look out for the album at the end of April.

.

Lastly a track from Sweden’s The Fiery Piano, More Like A Tiger, Less Like A Dove is yet another fine example of the indie rock coming from that neck of the woods so to speak. Quirky, upbeat and melodic, for no good reason it makes us think of something Conor Oberst might do if he was off his tits on speed. You can get a free download of their album here.

Thursday Means Six More Of The Best!

Been a little while since we’ve rounded up a few of the best tunes that have found their way into our iTunes library recently. So, here is a great way to kick off your Thursday with six tracks gathered from our in-box and our favourite blogs.

First up is the brooding psych-rock of Creepoid and a slow burning track from Horse Heaven called Dream Out. Next, some wonderfully scrappy punk from Nu Sensae, and thirdly we have the first taste of Grass Widow’s planned new album Internal Logic in the shape of Goldilocks Zone.

We’ve posted the high octane garage glam of the Burnt Ones before and new single Meet The Golden One doesn’t disappoint, meanwhile Taffy’s bubble-gum style fuzzed up psych-pop is also a delight – try out Haah for proof.

Lastly we have a short, but pastorally sweet track of typically sun-dappled Americana from Woods from their new split with Amps For Christ.

We seem to be getting overwhelmed by high quality videos at the moment so it would be churlish and not a little selfish of us not to share some of the best with you.

Kicking off is the wonderful video for the delicately beautiful Tuck The Darkness In from the Bowerbirds new album The Clearing.

a

Next we have Cheyenne Marie Mize and a video for her adventurous track Wishing Well from new EP We Don’t Need.

Iroquois Falls is Toronto resident Priya Thomas, a creation that came about following the death of her best friend and roommate. After which she fell into disorientation and despair, and it is chronicled by this music she recorded. The sound falls somewhere in between Patti Smith, Lydia Lunch and Grouper. Check it out.

a

By contrast The Vespers are irreverent and even goofy in this video for the upbeat indie pop of brand new song Flower Flower. It comes from new album The Fourth Wall (out April 3rd) – grab another track from it below as well.

a

Download The Vespers – Better Now mp3 (from The Fourth Wall)

And talking of irreverence, here is the Boom Bang’s stop-motion video for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme tune. It has over 4,000 individual pictures, 60 hand drawn images and 3 months of tedious work to recreate the nostalgic 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon introduction in stop motion. Watch it and download it for free.

Spring Offensive are another emerging Oxford band who are starting to create quite a name for themselves. This is the video for the gorgeous Carrier (the b-side to forthcoming single Worry Fill My Heart) and you can see why the buzz is justified.

a

Bonnie And Clyde is the debut single from The Last Party, due out on the 16th April, and is one of the best new tracks we’ve heard for a while. Well worth checking out – see if you can spot guest star Clint Boon from the Inspiral Carpets?

a

Sharon Van Etten’s new album Tramp is finally seeming to be bringing her the attention and plaudits she deserves. This is the video for Leonard.

UK indie rockers The Joy Formidable’s newest single is the pummelling rocker A Heavy Abacus, which the band have recorded and released a new music video for.

And finally we have another debut video, this one is from indie rockers Wildlife for their song Sea Dreamer. It’s got rival gangs, street bowling, food fighting, a gun, more weapons, more fighting, and props – lots and lots of props. Download it for free too…

Wild NothingYour Rabbit Feet mp3

Latest chilled (and chilly) dream pop from new indie-wunderkind

We came across The Burnt Ones whilst idly trawling the net. While they fit comfortably in to the garage rock genre, they’ve turned up the sleaze-ometer to eleven and specialise in dirty, hook-laden surf rock and heavy doses of 7os glam. The results are wonderful.

First we tracked down fuzzy, wall-of-sound guitar onslaught of  Gonna Listen To T Rex (All Night Long) which is the lead track from debut EP All Night Long. Next came forthcoming album taster Bury Me In Smoke, which offers an appropriately  T-Rex stomp with a echo of Bobby Gillespie style vocals and those same fuzzed up surf guitars. Great stuff.

Their debut album Black Teeth & Golden Tongues is due out in August on Roaring Colonel Records (the label of My Old Kentucky Blog).

Visit their MySpace here where you can also buy their limited first 7″ too.
