Mad Mackerel's Best Of The Month: May 2013

Here is our round-up of our favourite downloads from May’s posts together with a few newbies that, together, make a mix of twenty tracks that is as eclectic as it is perfect! Enjoy.

High Coast – Talvatis
Sweetly picked Americana.

Landmarks – Cuscutta
Lovely, unhurried, slice of woozy, psych-pop in the grand traditions of Spiritualized or Mercury Rev.

Black Manila – Père Lachaise
Addictive blend of classic west coast garage riffs, Detroit proto-punk and British charm.

The Delta Routine – New York Avenue
Swaggering blues rock and roll.

Graham MacRae – Game Changer
Those Bill Fay and Bill Callahan comparisons seem pretty much on the money.

Blank Realm – Working On Love
Utterly seductive, completely irresistible, and totally infectious slacker psych-pop.

Scott & Charlene’s Wedding – Fakin’ NYC
Typically ragged and ramshackle anthem of wry observation.

Mathew Sawyer – Feeeeling
Another excellent example of his unique/oddball/visitor from Mars perspective on the world.

The Lawsuits – Onion
A beguiling and schizophrenic mix of modern Americana.

Duquette Johnston – Cherry Blossom
A fretful, plaintive vocal and some wonderfully ominous fuzzy guitar lines are counterbalanced by lovely harmonies and robust percussion.

Brendan Benson – Swallow You Whole
Infectiously jaunty piano led slice of indie rock.

Estrangers – Cape Fear
Full of bombastic and romantic exuberance, part cinematic dreamscape and part Italian beach excursion.

Therese Aune – Chameleon
Haunting amalgamation of sounds from accordion, to metallophone, to piano, paints a picture of an introvert, who is marooned on the outside looking in.

No Kill – Sledding
Treasure of jangly guitars and sugar-sweet melodies expertly woven with a woozy, fuzzed up garage rock sensibility.

Hunting Ulysses – Delicious Ice
Raw, lo-fi garage goodness.

Vandaveer – Omie Wise
Another murder ballad reinvented by macabre folksters.

And to finish off we have four new tunes. First from Dirty Streets, Stay Thirsty is heavy music bathed in blues, folk and psychedelia, with chops to spare and a working class point of view. Old Pretender namecheck influences as the Sex Pistols and the Jesus & Mary Chain on their new track I’m Alright while Hugo is the debut single by Kent indie rockers Moccasins. Lastly we have the lo-fi garage surf-pop of Silkies and Walk At Midnight which comes from their forthcoming EP released in June.

Duquette Johnston Offers Up Cherry Blossom

Next week sees the release of Rabbit Runs A Destiny, the fourth studio album from Birmingham, Alabama native Duquette Johnston.

In advance of the big occasion, he has now released a third track from the record to tickle the earbuds and this time it is the excellent Cherry Blossom. It has a slightly more anxious feel than the previous songs we’ve heard, a fretful, plaintive vocal and some wonderfully ominous fuzzy guitar lines are counterbalanced by lovely harmonies and robust percussion.

With every new track we hear, we anticipate the whole album a little bit more. This is the best we’ve heard from Duquette Johnston yet and we’d highly recommend you head over to Pledge Music here to pre-order.

Videos of the Day

Videos and tunes to enjoy from Duquette Johnston and his wonderful animation for his gorgeous song Silver And Gold (get his free EP from Noisetrade here), as well as the frenetic front room antics of Manicorn (get their album on a pay-what-you-want deal here). We have a new single from indie rockers The Young Evil and to finish, an excellent slice of garage rock from The Outfits and their video for Strange Bones from most recent release Broken West Wishbone Test.

Duquette Johnston on Noisetrade

The Rebel King (EP) is Duquette Johnston’s first solo release in three years, and it features two re-recorded songs from his last album Rugged & Fancy, and Dancing Song, which is the first preview of his new album Rabbit Runs a Destiny (due out in mid-2013).

You can download the EP from Noisetrade for free by clicking here. You can see our previous Duquette Johnston posts here.

Here is our regular round up of the best of January’s posts plus a couple of new tracks for your listening pleasure – all beautifully designed to make one perfect mixtape.

Download Wooden Wand – The DNR Waltz mp3

More classic down-tempo folk from greatly underrated MM fave.

Download Phosphorescent – Are You Ready For The Country? mp3

Riff-heavy, mean-assed cover which brilliantly captures the double-edged viciousness of Neil Young’s original.

Download Akron/Family – So It Goes mp3

A soulful psych-bounce over a groove both surly and sexy.

Download Secret Colours – Follow The Drone mp3

Texas-style psychedelia with a modern veneer.

Download The Veils – Bloom mp3

Nicely taut and hypnotic affair with an almost Wilco-esque bassline – it’s melodic, unpredictable and very, very good!

Download Kurt Vile – Jesus Fever mp3

Excellent appetiser from forthcoming album Smoke Ring For My Halo.

Download Pete & The Pirates – Winter 1 mp3 Removed by a modern day King Canute who doesn’t realise it has been given away free all over the internet. You cannot offer it free in one place and not expect it to turn up in another and what’s the difference? Get it loads of other places via the Hype Machine.

Welcome return from indie stalwarts offering a new direction and an echo of Donna Summer crossed with Can

Download Obits – You Gotta Lose mp3

More wonderfully sleazy, rockabilly rumble.

Download The Builders & The Butchers – Lullaby mp3

Another perfect example of their debauched country/folk stompathons.

A hymn to channel the raw feelings and chronicle the lives of the fucked-up romantics of Hurray For The Riff Raff’s home by the Mississippi.

An everyday tale of resignation and failed expectations Howling Owls style, this time it has an almost a waltz-time feel.

Promising mix of catchy folk and indie pop that has that little extra quality that means it insistently burrows its way in past all the flotsam and jetsam in your brain and lodges itself firmly in your head.

Gorgeous pop disguised in a layer of sonic distortion.

Calls to mind the Ramones jamming with the Sonics and having a blast.

Download Duke Garwood – Summer Gold mp3

Sparse, skeletal unsettling folk-blues.

Download The Skull Defekts – Fragrant Nimbus mp3

It’s minimal and powerful, it’s a bit raga, a bit drone, has some tribal chants, lots of repetition, it’s hypnotic, a bit trancey, some pyschedelia and seriously rhythmic!

Download Earth Girl Helen Brown – Hit After Hit mp3

Fictitious, nomadic, psychedelic soul singer, featuring a unique mix of country, girl group, R&B, and ghoulishness.

Download Alexander – Truth mp3

Mellow, sunshine feel good pop that is effortlessly easy on the ear.

Download James Vincent McMorrow – If I Had A Boat mp3

Five-part harmony echoing over the sounds of an organ and folk guitar in the eerie opener to debut album.

Download Duquette Johnston – Broke & Lonely Ones mp3

A fragile, acoustic ballad – Johnston tells stories of those on their way down and those who’ll never bounce back up, bar-room tales of what might have been and what should have been, and songs of hope and redemption.

In what has been the best month of music releases for a long time, we finish with the newly fresh and minted first advance track from indie folk heavyweights Fleet Foxes with the title track from forthcoming new album Helplessness Blues. By contrast we also have fresh-faced newcomers Veelee with their quirky, folkish take on art-rock, all angular repetition, drone pop and lovely harmonies that makes their EP The Future Sight a delight. And lastly we have the new EP from Derby, titled Madeline — an edgier collection of smoky, riff-heavy basement rock that still keeps some roots in their trademark infectious indie-pop as evidenced in the undeniably catchy toe-tapper Don’t Believe In You.

Download Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues mp3 (from Helplessness Blues)

Download Veelee – When You Gonna Come Home? mp3 (from The Future Sight EP)

Download Derby – Don’t Believe In You mp3 (from Madeline EP)

We were unaware of Duquette Johnston until a few days ago, when he was referenced as a friend and collaborator in an e-mail from MM fave Wooden Wand.

His biography on Reverbnation says “In the past Duquette Johnston was a founding member of such influential bands as Verbena and Cutgrass. Along the way sharing the stage with bands such as Pavement, Jesus Lizard, the Strokes, Bonnie Prince Billy and so many more. For several years Duquette slipped into a dark place and found himself locked up in the Etowah County Detention center facing a very long prison sentence. By the grace of God he was given a second chance and released his first solo album Etowah, on Superphonic Records. In the present Duquette is making a new record with The Rebel Kings to be released sometime this year.

That was enough for us to check him out and we were pretty excited by what we found. On his Bandcamp page we found two albums, Rugged & Fancy from March 2010 and It Sings Because It Has A Song released a year earlier. Both are available for free download. Both are outstanding.

It is a beguiling blend of catchy, lo-fi, psych-tinged folk on the one hand and fragile, acoustic ballads on the other. Here are stories of those on their way down and those who’ll never bounce back up, bar-room tales of what might have been and what should have been, and songs of hope and redemption.

Check out the first tracks from each album below and my guess is you’ll soon be clicking through to download the rest of them.

You can visit his MySpace page here.
