  2. Bat For Lashes – I Do
  3. Mind Spiders – Running
  4. Hooded Fang – Tunnel Vision
  5. Wintersleep – Territory
  6. Frightened Rabbit – Death Dream
  7. Drug Pizza – No Reaction
  8. Prism Tats – Pacifist Masochist
  9. Jennifer O’Connor – Black Sky Blanket

Mind Spiders

Prosthesis is the fourth album in five years from Mark Ryan’s shadowy, shape-shifting “solo” band Mind Spiders.

Based in Ft. Worth, TX, Mind Spiders launched pretty much immediately after his last project, the well-loved, highly-influential Marked Men went on indefinite hiatus at the beginning of 2009.

Incorporating garage rock, post-punk, bedroom pop, krautrock, and tons of other obscure references throughout the eight song LP, everything blends seamlessly into ominous, bleak (yet somehow still effortlessly catchy) dark pop explorations.

Check out the excellent first taste that comes in the form of the frantic urgency of Cold.

Mad Mackerel's Best Of September, October & November Mix

We’ve been a bit tardy with our round ups of the Best of the Month downloads on MM, and so we have a bumper three month collection for you before the countdown begins on Monday for our favourite 100 tracks and 50 albums of the year.

So without further ado…here is Part 1 of the pick of the downloads from September to November…and as usual, a couple of new tunes too.

Gross Relations – Discovery Zone
A more energetic, infectiously distorted slab of garage pop you’re unlikely to find…

Scary People – Dreams Of Gold
Energetically laden with time changes and bound by glorious hooks, but anchored by thumping, driven drum beats, soaring guitar passages and heady distorted vocals.

Owls Of The Swamp – Happiness Is A Sad Song
Aussie troubadour’s beautiful and sweetly sorrowful folk.

Cate Le Bon – I Think I Knew (with Perfume Genius)
Unusually fragile and undeniably lovely cut from her new album.

The Eversons – Creepy
Effervescent, bubbling indie-pop.

Miesha & The Spanks – Please Don’t Blow
From forthcoming album Girls Like Wolves and sounds like the bastard lovechild of Joan Jett and L7.

Aisha Burns – Sold
A voice of pure, crystalline beauty and power that grips from the very first note.

The Underground Man – Bad Vibrations
Stark, wistful indie-pop.

Brother Dege – The Black Sea
Swamp blues boogie combined with flammable rhetoric.

Big Deal – Swapping Spit
The new single from their much acclaimed album of dark, intoxicating, occasionally grungy delights.

Lo Fine – Lie In White
Literate, thoughtful, slowcore tinged Americana.

Sun Club – Beauty Meat
Dirty sunshine pop.

12 Dirty Lovers – Faster
Feral sounding, outsider’s indie rock and art-punk – think Pavement, Sonic Youth and Devo fighting to the death in a sack.

Fim – Fast Cars
All choppy, needling guitars, jerky percussion and and WTF vocals.

The Inky Depths – Doesn’t Matter At All
Melodic, jngly indie in a slightly Big Star or Elliott Smith-type vein

Dan Whitehouse – Reaching For A State Of Mind
Expansive folk – questioning, observing, and filled with optimism and self-doubt.

The Golden Furs – Run Back
Weaves together rock, pop, and folk with sweet harmonies and sultry vocals.

No Valley – Charlie Don’t Surf
As infectious a slice of garagey rock as you’re likely to come across.

Ghost Wave – Kind Of A Drag
A tasty cover of the Buckingham’s track.

Shearwater – Fucked Up Life
Fabulous cover of the Baptist Generals song.

[Click through for free download]

Young Mammals – Build A House
Effortlessly crafted noisy, jaggedly dark and distorted pop.

Steady Sun – Garden Path Song
Kicking off with a slow and slightly ominous groove it soon breaks out into something far more infectious taking with it a little reverb, some synths and a delicate floating vocal.

Holyoak – Silver Boys
A gently hallucinatory lullaby of equal parts indie folk and lyrical poetry.

Calgary James – Days Like These
Thoroughly enjoyable, meandering acoustic guitar ditty with a nicely judged psych-pop undercurrent – should appeal to fans of Mac DeMarco.

Download Mind Spiders – Make Make Make Make mp3
A perfect slice of sci-fi garage punk.

Download Englishman – More Than Insects mp3
A two-minute gem of folk-pop.

Download James Keyes – Darkness Come Creeping mp3 (from The Middle)
Somewhere between the throaty junkyard stomp of Tom Waits and the wild mercurial ramblings of Dylan.

And to finish a couple of new tracks – first up are local boys Beta Blocker and The Body Clock, the Oxford three-piece who define their music as “deliciously distorted, balancing noise, melody, space, and rhythm in a fuzz-fuelled frenzy. Second is a sublime Vic Chesnutt cover by Cat Meat who deliver a wonderful version of Isadora Duncan (from his album Little).

Mind Spiders Announce New Album

The very wonderful Mind Spiders are back with their third album in 3 years!

Titled Inhumanistic, it finds the band going in a slightly more stripped down direction than previous efforts, with influences ranging from Devo’s Freedom Of Choice and Wall Of Voodoo, to old horror movies (the song Electric Things is about the movie From Beyond, for example).

Grab yourself the first track, Make Make Make Make is yet another perfect slice of sci-fi garage punk that more than whets the appetite and suggests the band are keeping up the standards set by last year’s brilliant Meltdown.

Cantering desert-folk.

Perfect, primal garage rock.

Download First Aid Kit – The Lion’s Roar mp3 (from The Lion’s Roar)
Title track of new album showcases those gorgeous and beautiful folk harmonies.

Download Guy Capecelatro III – Like Anything mp3 (from North For The Winter)
As much a carefully constructed poem as it is a song. There are no wasted words, and each one is sung in a minimal, whispering voice accompanied by sparse instrumentation, including a haunting saw, creating a mood that is beautifully sombre.

Download Gabriel & The Hounds – The World Unfolds mp3 (from Kiss Full Of Teeth)
Deceptively seductive song that calls to mind artists from across the decades and as diverse as The Byrds to the Silver Jews.

Alt-country duo use just 2 old guitars to create a sound that is intimate, honest and ethereal.

An absolute gem, a gentle strum, a loosely insistent rhythm, hoarsely whispered vocals and a sweetly climactic chorus.

Beguiling mix of dreamy psychedelia over a fuzz of shoegazey guitars and reverb.

High octane, clattering punk riffage.

Download Big Deal – Chair mp3 (from Chair EP)
Harmonious, sweetly strummed indie-pop with a nice touch of reverb.

Download William Fitzsimmons – Blood and Bones (Acoustic Version) mp3 (from Noisetrade Free Sampler)
Alternative version of track from deluxe edition of acclaimed album Gold In The Shadow.

Download I See Hawks In L.A. – Dear Flash mp3 (from New Kind Of Lonely)
Authentic acoustic Americana.

Download The Low Anthem – Stories Of The Street mp3 (from The Songs Of Leonard Cohen Covered)
The wonderful Low Anthem put their stamp on a track from Leonard Cohen’s classic debut.

Download Vacant Fever – Kill Kill Kill mp3 (from Kill Kill Kill EP)
Recalls some of the classic work of bands like Wire or Gang Of Four. It is jerky, minimal and, best of all, genre-defying!

And to finish off this month’s bumper offering we have the new track from folksters The Bowerbirds, some cascading guitars and thunderous rhythms from The Jealous Sound’s new release, A Gentle Reminder and a six minute sonically layered slab of climactic indie rock from LA band Louden Swain that we’ve got on repeat here. Download Wooden Wand – The DNR Waltz mp3

More classic down-tempo folk from greatly underrated MM fave.

Download Phosphorescent – Are You Ready For The Country? mp3

Riff-heavy, mean-assed cover which brilliantly captures the double-edged viciousness of Neil Young’s original.

A soulful psych-bounce over a groove both surly and sexy.

Download Secret Colours – Follow The Drone mp3

Texas-style psychedelia with a modern veneer.

Download The Veils – Bloom mp3

Nicely taut and hypnotic affair with an almost Wilco-esque bassline – it’s melodic, unpredictable and very, very good!

Download Kurt Vile – Jesus Fever mp3

Excellent appetiser from forthcoming album Smoke Ring For My Halo.

Download Pete & The Pirates – Winter 1 mp3 Removed by a modern day King Canute who doesn’t realise it has been given away free all over the internet. You cannot offer it free in one place and not expect it to turn up in another and what’s the difference? Get it loads of other places via the Hype Machine.

Welcome return from indie stalwarts offering a new direction and an echo of Donna Summer crossed with Can

More wonderfully sleazy, rockabilly rumble.

Download The Builders & The Butchers – Lullaby mp3

Another perfect example of their debauched country/folk stompathons.

A hymn to channel the raw feelings and chronicle the lives of the fucked-up romantics of Hurray For The Riff Raff’s home by the Mississippi.

An everyday tale of resignation and failed expectations Howling Owls style, this time it has an almost a waltz-time feel.

Promising mix of catchy folk and indie pop that has that little extra quality that means it insistently burrows its way in past all the flotsam and jetsam in your brain and lodges itself firmly in your head.

Gorgeous pop disguised in a layer of sonic distortion.

Sparse, skeletal unsettling folk-blues.

It’s minimal and powerful, it’s a bit raga, a bit drone, has some tribal chants, lots of repetition, it’s hypnotic, a bit trancey, some pyschedelia and seriously rhythmic!

A fragile, acoustic ballad – Johnston tells stories of those on their way down and those who’ll never bounce back up, bar-room tales of what might have been and what should have been, and songs of hope and redemption.

In what has been the best month of music releases for a long time, we finish with the newly fresh and minted first advance track from indie folk heavyweights Fleet Foxes with the title track from forthcoming new album Helplessness Blues. By contrast we also have fresh-faced newcomers Veelee with their quirky, folkish take on art-rock, all angular repetition, drone pop and lovely harmonies that makes their EP The Future Sight a delight. And lastly we have the new EP from Derby, titled Madeline — an edgier collection of smoky, riff-heavy basement rock that still keeps some roots in their trademark infectious indie-pop as evidenced in the undeniably catchy toe-tapper Don’t Believe In You.

Download Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues mp3 (from Helplessness Blues)

Download Veelee – When You Gonna Come Home? mp3 (from The Future Sight EP)

Download Derby – Don’t Believe In You mp3 (from Madeline EP)

Here are three gems of garage rock/punk/pop joy for you, especially designed to brighten up a drab and dreary January Sunday.

We’ve posted about the Mind Spiders and the Thick Shakes before. Both play a wonderfully uncluttered, joyous form of proto garage-rock that is simple, unaffected and damn catchy. We have a track from the forthcoming Mind Spiders self-titled album and the Thick Shakes new 7″, Why Buy The Cow.

We also have one half of the new Best Coast / Jeff The Brotherhood split 7″. This is the latter’s offering – another wonderful track that calls to mind the Ramones jamming with the Sonics and having a blast.

Check out MySpace pages here for Mind Spiders, Thick Shakes, Jeff The Brotherhood.

Download The Mind Spiders – Neurotic Gold mp3 (from The Mind Spiders)

Download The Thick Shakes – Banned From The Laundromat mp3 (from Why Buy The Cow 7″)

Here is a lazy blogger’s round-up of some of the new tracks that we’ve come across and enjoyed over the past few days and weeks, some of which might tickle your ears in a good way.

The Moondoggies delivered a cracking album in 2008’s Don’t Be A Stranger and have a follow-up due in September titled Tidelands. In the meantime they are releasing a five track limited EP of songs that didn’t make the new album, and which will mostly be sold on tour or via Hardly Art. This track from it is another first-class example of their graceful, countrified Americana.

Download The Moondoggies – Fly Mama Fly mp3 (from You’ll Find No Answers Here EP)

Similarly Acorn release No Ghost in little more than a week’s time, the follow up to their much acclaimed 2008 release Glory Hope Mountain. Reviews suggest they will be delivering another gem of gorgeous harmonies, crackling folk rock and acoustic strumming. Check the subtle, swelling melodies of Restoration for proof.

Download Acorn – Restoration mp3 (from No Ghost)

By contrast Gabe Holcombe aka Vehicle Blues has a debut 4 track EP just out via Bridgetown Records and the title track is a fuzzy, lo-fi rush of swirling guitars and mumbled lyrics that is held together by a catchy rhythm that bobs and weaves just under the surface. You can get a free Bridgetown sampler here.

Download Vehicle Blues – Changer mp3 (from Changer EP)

Brother and sister duo The White Ravens draw from a variety of musical influences, ranging from The Beatles to the Fiery Furnaces, yet manage to create a distinct sonic experience for their listeners. They have a album titled Gargoyles And Weathervanes due on on July 6th, here are a couple of tracks from it.

Download White Ravens – Sparks mp3 (from Gargoyles And Weathervanes)

Download White Ravens – Tick Tock mp3 (from Gargoyles And Weathervanes)

Naked Hearts released their album Mass Hysteria earlier this month. The Brooklyn boy/girl duo offer fuzzy indie pop that suggests a lot of time listening to Sonic Youth and The Lemonheads and it is none the worse for all that.

Download Naked Hearts – Mass Hysteria mp3 (from Mass Hysteria)

The Cave Weddings final single is out on Bachelor Records (buy here) and is called Never Never Know. It is two minutes of glorious sweet-as-sugar, 60s drenched rock’n’roll that can’t fail to put a silly grin on your face.

Download The Cave Weddings – Never Never Know mp3 (from Never Never Know 7″)

Long Voyage are a folk band who evoke the backwoods and sunlight streaming through trees. They are offering their thoroughly enjoyable Spring Fair EP up for free download (get it here).

Download Long Voyage – Hot Air Balloon mp3 (from Spring Fair EP)

Similarly fans of Gillian Welch or Jenny Lewis will find much to like in Gwyneth & Monko’s 5 track EP Good Old Horse. Steady acoustic guitar, trickling mandolin and pure vocals contribute to a scaled back and earthy folk sound.

Download Gwyneth & Monko – Lexington Ballad mp3 (from Good Old Horse mp3)

I Can’t Move is a track from a new charity compilation Mixtapes for Haiti (info here). It is by Woodsman, a spacey, psychedelic four-piece from Denver and the submerged vocal drones and swelling, echoey backbeats combine to give a spectacular other-worldly presence to the song.

Download Woodsman – I Can’t Move mp3 (from Mixtapes For Haiti)

Finally The Mind Spiders have released a 7″ single on Dirtnap called Worlds Destroyed which is getting repeat plays here at MM. Reminiscent of the Ramones crossed with the Beach Boys with backing vocals from the Ronettes, it’s a soundtrack for cruising the beach with the top down, the volume up, and the sun shining.

Download The Mind Spiders – Worlds Destroyed mp3 (from Worlds Destroyed 7″)
