Mrs Mackerel's TFI Friday (31st August).

I’m melting.

Well I was until earlier today. After one week in the hottest Canarian August in 23 years, my quintessentially English temperature gauge and complexion were pining for a bit of cloud control and a drop in temperature. It was, as I thought, a week spent in whatever shade I could find, book in one hand, Mr Sangria in the other. Large hat and fifties style swimsuit notwithstanding, I have managed (albeit unintentionally, but alas unavoidably) to turn – in the words of HP –  “a shade of beige”.

And despite the heat, I did find several things to amuse me, one of which dear reader I share with you tonight: the “don’t let your dog poo here” sign a la Los Cristianos (see above), where the poor mutt appears to be excreting a tripod. It’s the little things.

So it’s back to normal life this week and welcome to wistful September, one of my favourite months. All change, new starts, looking forward.

Now the football season is underway, it’s also time to follow the gospel according to St Martin. You know it makes sense: convert before ye are damned!

Right, back to those Russians…

Well, technically it’s now Saturday, but here’s some sunshine for your weekend sweetly sown, just how I like it.

Mrs Mackerel's TFI Friday (28th October).Arrogance is a wholly unpleasant characteristic. Confidence, yes; arrogance, get ye out of my bloody space. Despite the urge to strike back, I pay homage to the way of the Mackerel: bide your time, wait awhile, then just wait for the penny to drop.  As MM always says, much better to know, step back, remove from the payroll, metaphorical or otherwise. What goes around often does come around. Not always, but often enough not to ignore.

I know he’s right. But just sometimes… A fin in the face is worth two in the bush?

Go in peace, Friday Friends.

Mrs Mackerel's TFI Friday (30th September). It’s been an unfortunate week on the domestic front. Water continues to leak. Holes have been dug. In the right place and deep enough, who knows?  If it carries on much longer I may jump in too. I wish Colin from Thames Water would understand that I simply don’t understand the mechanics and really have no desire to do the wrong thing.

And football. I wish some one would bump off Agent Bruce, Smiley styley. I await tomorrow’s horrors with bated breath (and glass at the ready).

Well enough whingeing for one Friday.  Here’s a song.  MM has already posted this, but he forgets my rock chick gene, and was a little surprised by my enthusiasm. Me and Joe Sprat think this is fantastic. A great bass line and a little bit Butthole Surfers in the guitar riff can only be a good thing. Top ten contender all sides: “your actions are infectious” . I should say so.

And let’s find another. Life is changing. Which way is it turning this time?

It’s been a hot week and tomorrow my eldest boy will be half the age I was when I had him.  How good is your maths?! Happy birthday my big lanky lad.

Download Henry’s Funeral Shoe – Dog Scratched Ear mp3 (from Donkey Jacket)

Download Sparklehorse – Cruel Sun mp3 (from Goodbye Spider)

If I’d started this week’s post about MM and his persistent apostrophe crimes, perhaps I could have selected Vampire Weekend’s Oxford Comma? Or perhaps that would have sung in his favour! But maybe, just maybe, I should let it go…

After a great family outing to Truck 13 last weekend, I’m taking a brief solo visit to see my good friend Isla (White) tomorrow. Truck highlights for me were Stornoway, Chapel Club, Blood Red Shoes, and Steve Mason. Hats off to Chapel Club for playing in the smelliest venue I’ve ever graced – in the cow barn!

Next week, it’s the long road home to Sunderland and, as ever, we will have a CD or three to keep us company. I was sifting through some old compilations (and peeling chewing gum off some of them – oops) when I came across this Friday’s track: Sparklehorse’s Hundreds of Sparrows.

Mark Linkous was a complicated character and a huge talent, who is very much missed. There’s a fragile sentiment captured in this song: “every hair on your head is counted; you are worth hundreds of sparrows”. It works for me on many different levels.

Enjoy your weekend.
