Yesterday we shared a couple of sweet covers by country-rockers Whitney and today we have another, altogether different cover version to offer you. One that heralds the return of LA’s Death Valley Girls.
Having made quite a name for themselves with their desert-blasted blend of rowdy proto-punk and primitive heavy metal, this is their first new offering since 2018 album Darkness Rains, and comes in the form of a two-song seven-inch, Breakthrough.
The title track is a cover of bluesy British rockers Atomic Rooster, though the band discovered the track through a rendition by Nigerian outfit The Funkees. With its grimy guitar riffs, fire-and-brimstone organ, and combative chorus, it is a perfect fit for the Death Valley Girls’ brand of stark transcendental rock.
Out via Suicide Squueze records on 12th June, it will be a limited edition one-time pressing of 750 copies on half purple & half black vinyl and includes a download card. The b-side is another cover — a ramped up version of Daniel Johnston’s loud-quiet-loud anthem Rock ‘N’ Roll / EGA. You can pre-order here.
