Shotgun Preacher is a free taster from the new album 60 More Miles by Ottawa’s Kings Of Lowertown. It takes a classic dirt-blues riff that wouldn’t have been out of place on the Doors’ LA Woman, and layers some distorted vocals over the top to provide just over two and a half minutes of visceral rock ‘n’ roll. Listen / click through to download it … Continue reading MM Shorts 406: Kings Of Lowertown
We’re liking the sound of this limited split 7″ (and digital) release by Carton and Alpha Cop via Negative Fun Records (out July 16th, order from their Bandcamp page here). We previously posted about Carton’s excellent Sunburst EP a couple of months ago, and their contribution to the split, Fingertips, is a slice of thrillingly ramshackle, wonderfully loud and bruising noise-pop that, if nothing else, will utterly terrify the … Continue reading Carton / Alpha Cop Split 7″
Back in 2011 we featured the hard charging, blue collar rock ‘n’ roll of Wormburner. With a third LP in the pipeline, they have released a limited edition single Today Might Be Our Day on limited edition 7″ and digital download via Negative Fun Records. Have a listen. Official release date is July 16th. . Continue reading MM Shorts 405: Wormburner
Colleen Collins and David Trenaman met in London, Ontario, Canada in about 1994. And Construction & Destruction started in about 2005, or so. Dark Lark is the fifth album they’ve put together together. The record offers ten songs that range from rugged Americana to experimental rock and in topic from rural isolation to the fall of Troy. Trenaman and Collins trade off on vocals, each adding unique characteristics … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends Construction & Destruction
Be All Be Easy is the new single from Woods, which is due for release next week. It continues down the path of easy going, 70s inspired country rock – think The Byrds, Tom Petty et al. Have a listen. Continue reading New Woods Single

Fiver was birthed in 2012 as a medium for Simone Schmidt (The Highest Order & One Hundred Dollars) to write and record original material – and boy are we glad she did! Solo album Lost The Plot is a dynamic beast, sometimes personal, and undoubtedly political. The nine songs engage the spirit and soul – introspective at times, others, outgoing and frenetic, even treading into … Continue reading Introducing >>> Fiver
Just The Dudes is a new three track EP from The Sweets. It dips its fingers into many musical pies – shoegaze, psychedelia, garage pop, and then coats them with hazy swirls of reverb and gentle distortion that is definitely more than moreish. Check out the delightfully woozy, surf-pop of She Says below, and order a limited run cassette or as a digital download from … Continue reading MM Shorts 404: The Sweets
The marvellously named Cat Meat have made a new four track digital EP, Scarlet Belle, available for free via their Bandcamp page. Despite the connotations conjured up by the name, the band actually play an exquisite blend of sorrowful folk and alt-country, expertly utilising guitar, piano, banjo, harmonica, violin and musical saw in ways that call to mind Sparklehorse, Wilco and the ghosts of long-gone … Continue reading New Free EP From Cat Meat
Sleepsick is the lead single from Toronto’s Dinosaur Bones’ upcoming album, Shaky Dream, which drops on the 6th via Dine Alone Records. We last featured them nearly three years ago, but happily they have stayed true to their mix of off-kilter, broody indie rock and NYC garage – Sleepsick is an alluring, hooked out blend of dark pop that we’re enjoying very much. Download it … Continue reading Dinosaur Bones – Sleepsick
