New Album From Sharon Van Etten

The wonderful Sharon Van Etten’s new album Are We There is out at the end of May via Jagjaguwar. The first taste is the hazy dream-pop of Taking Chances, her gorgeous vocals drifting over a smooth, polished rhythmic backdrop. It is as close to Beach House as anything else and perhaps heralds a slightly different direction for the album. Listen for yourself. . Continue reading New Album From Sharon Van Etten

New From Ukiah Drag

Last September we ran an “Introducing” post on The Ukiah Drag. We described their cassette release Jazz Mama Is Cryin as four tracks of brilliantly bleak, desolate, and warped blues and acid-rock – taut, tense, hypnotic and all consuming – like the evil offspring of Giant Sand and the Birthday Party. Now they have a new 7″ primed for release. The Dirt Trip is the band’s first studio output … Continue reading New From Ukiah Drag

Round Up Time

Following our Best of February mix post earlier, we have now rounded up a few tunes for the start of March for you too. We can offer you ten cracking new tracks to listen to including post-folkies Peggy Sue, the heavy, slow burnin’ garage punk of Twin Berlin, some rootsy soul from Greyhounds, the first single of gritty Americana from Turchi’s forthcoming long-player, and a fabulous … Continue reading Round Up Time

Mad Mackerel’s Best Of The Month: February 2014

Another month, another free mix of the best of our downloads from February. As always the mix includes some new tunes too from the retro 60s swagger of The Rebel Light, quirky bedroom pop from Copenhagen’s Eerie Glue, the excellent Lou Reed inspired, slacker rock of Posse, and King of Prussia’s literate, indie pop jangle. Download them all below. . The Woodgrains – Devils Disheveled … Continue reading Mad Mackerel’s Best Of The Month: February 2014

MM Shorts 527: Coves Cover Scott Walker

Coves have offered up their contribution to a Scott Walker tribute album, Songs from Montague Terrace – A Tribute to Scott Walker, which came out at the tail end of last year. The duo have taken on Walker’s fragilely beautiful Duchess, and recently put it back up on Soundcloud…seemed a shame not to post it as we missed it completely first time round! . Landlady – Above My Ground

We’re pretty taken with this track, Above My Ground by Landlady. It has been around for a while, but now newly signed to Hometapes, it is getting a new lease of life ahead of a summer album. It is described as a ‘disarming singalong anthem‘, which seems pretty accurate to us, though there is something distinctly oddball about it too, in a good way of … Continue reading Landlady – Above My Ground

Videos of the Day: The Coathangers || Reverend Horton Heat || The Sea The Sea || Such Hounds || Rare Monk

Spoiling you with five excellent videos this morning. I don’t know where you are, but we’ve got yet another day of dank, dreary, drizzly rain and I need something to brighten up my Friday. So, contrast and compare scrappy indie jangle from Such Hounds, gentle intricate harmonies from The Sea The Sea, tough, catchy garage from The Coathangers, fevered, intense pop from Rare Monks, and … Continue reading Videos of the Day: The Coathangers || Reverend Horton Heat || The Sea The Sea || Such Hounds || Rare Monk
