It’s that time again. The Insound monthly free digital mix is one of our favourites and we almost always discover a new gem or two within the fifteen or so songs they put out.

As usual it is there for a week only so click here to get the whole thing or check out a couple of our favorites from this month, another track from BOBBY, which follows on nicely from yesterday’s post and one from another MM fave, Paleo.

Other bands on this months compilation include The Black Lips, The Wooden Birds, Fucked Up and Brilliant Colours.

Another bonanza month. Another round up of the very best tracks we posted in March. Another selection of new tunes to get your teeth into too.

So without further ado…

Download White Denim – Drug mp3 (from D)

First taste of rockers new album. Bodes well. Very well.

Download The Everymen – Ballad Of Sarin mp3 (from Hello, Nice Evening. We Are The Everymen)

Cocksure but not arrogant, intense without being overwhelming, and high on the sleaze factor as the shredded vocals of Sarin McHugh gleefully sit astride pounding drums and thunderous guitars.

Download Strand Of Oaks – Wolves mp3 (Phosphorescent Cover via Folkadelphia Session)

Cover song heaven?  (MM faves) Strand of Oaks covering the sublime Wolves by (MM faves) Phosphorescent.

Download The Rural Alberta Advantage – North Star mp3 (from Departing)

A perfectly pitched tale of longing and desperation.

Download Widowspeak – Harsh Realm mp3 (from Harsh Realm 7″)

A nicely hazy, dreamy pop nugget that makes those Mazzy Star comparisons completely understandable.

Download Tyburn Saints – You’ve Gone Stray mp3 (from For The Benefit Of Strangers)

The theme tune to a slasher film written by Nick Cave? It could well be the sexiest serial killer based love song ever written.

Download Cult of Youth – New West mp3 (from Cult of Youth)

The dramatically deep baritone of vocalist Sean Ragon is enough to create a palpable sense of menace and foreboding which we’re quite fond of here at MM.

Download Obits – Shift Operator mp3 (from Moody, Standard and Poor)

Surf influenced, stripped back, garage rock.

Download The Owsley Brothers – Under The Shade Of A Live Oak mp3 (from Separated At Birth)

A slow, pulsing blues riff and a plaintive vocal combine perfectly to give us a song so authentic that it sounds like it was made to be sung in the cottonfields and on backwoods porches throughout the South.

Download The Diamond Center – Caraway mp3 (from Caraway 7″)

A haunting, echoing melancholy feel that spreads over almost six and a half pulsing minutes and somehow manages to soothe and surprise in equal measure.

Download Generationals – Ten-Twenty-Ten mp3 (from Actor-Caster)

Hands down the catchiest slice of indie-rock we’ve posted in a good long while.

Download Mathew Sawyer & The Ghosts – Revenge of The Extra From Zulu mp3 (from How Snakes Eat)

Fragile folk gem married to caustic lyrical venom. Result: a winner.

Download Alela Diane – To Begin mp3 (from Alela Diane & Wild Devine)

Bold and self-assured with more of a countrified twang than her usual sparser, pastoral folk feel.

Download The Lumerians – Gaussian Castles mp3 (from Transmalinnia)

Meditative drones, murky ritualistic rhythms, and layered vocals populate and abound. Dive in!

Download Josh T Pearson – Woman When I’ve Raised Hell…(Alternative Version) mp3

Seven heart wrenching minutes of the most despairing ballad in a long, long time documenting the relentless pain and suffering caused when a relationship passes from failing to broken.

Download The Donkeys – Don’t Know Who We Are mp3 (from Born With Stripes)

A perfect slice of twangy relaxed sunshine rock.

Download Dead Gaze – Fishing With Robert mp3 (from Dead Gaze 7″)

A marvellous combination of fuzzy vocal dischord over a folkish guitar strum, and a side order of New Order poppiness.

Download Erland & The Carnival – Nightingale mp3 (from Nightingale)

The reinventing of old folklore into sinister modern day fairytales.

Download Arborea – Careless Love mp3 (from Red Planet)

Mixing folk, some floating, spacey drone and minimalist percussion with Shanti Curran’s gorgeous vocals to mesmerising effect, the spine tingling results are stark, but beautifully compelling.

Download Paleo – In The Movies mp3 (from Fruit Of The Spirit)

Two minutes of indie folk perfection with a melody so catchy you’ll be humming it for days.

Download James Leg – Drowning In Fire mp3 (from Solitary Pleasure)

Imagine if the Black Keys sold their souls to the devil – they’d probably end up playing like this.

Download Twilight Hotel – Mahogany Veneer mp3 (from When The Wolves Go Blind)

A brilliant combination of alt-country and spaghetti-western desert twang that moves languidly to conclusion via poignant, scalpel sharp lyrics.

Download Bill Callahan – Baby’s Breath mp3 (from Apocalypse)

First taste from new album. More classic singer-songwriting!

Download Thurston Moore – Benediction mp3 (from Demolished Thoughts)

Personal and slightly brooding piece of work from the quieter, more introspective end of his musical spectrum.

Download Psychedelic Horseshit – French Countryside mp3 (from Laced)

Bustling, uptempo, hook-laden, melted outsider pop song.

Download Marissa Nadler – Baby I Will Leave You In The Morning mp3 (from Marissa Nadler)

Ethereal songwriting, rich with imagery and beautiful textures.

Download Fucked Up! – The Other Shoe mp3 (from David Comes To Life)

Punk rockers find a mellower more introverted side.

Download The Limianas – AF3548 mp3 (from AF3548 7″)

More authentic garage rock’n’roll done to perfection.

Download Damon Moon & The Whispering Drifters – Heaven Was A Glass Of Wine mp3 (Merle Haggard Cover from Snowed In Sessions EP)

Gorgeously cracked and bleeding version of Merle Haggard’s despairing original.

Download James Irwin – Blue Dust mp3 (from Blue Dust Digital Single)

A fine example of indie-folk of the very best kind.

Download The Builders & The Butchers – Rotten To The Core mp3 (from Dead Reckoning)

Calls to mind the blood and thunder preachers in dusty pulpits, the hellfires and the brimstone, and the intense fury of both the righteous and the scorned.

Download Brown Bird – Bilgewater mp3 (from The Sound of Ghosts EP)

A mix of sparse, haunted folk, outlaw country and gypsy riot!

And to finish off, here is another Strand of Oaks cover, this time of Joe Pug’s wonderful Hymn 101, a rare remix (for us anyway) of Moon Duo, a wonderful new band in the shape of rootsy trio Cowboy And Indian, the title track from blistering blues-rock duo White Mystery’s new album Blood & Venom and in the krautrock rhythms and pyschedelia of Echo Lady, probably Wet Hair’s finest release to date.

Download Strand Of Oaks – Hymn 101 mp3 (Joe Pug cover)

Download Moon Duo – In The Sun (Purling Hiss Remix) mp3

Download Cowboy And Indian – Ledbellies (Hurt My Pride) mp3 (from Cowboy And Indian)

Download White Mystery – Blood & Venom mp3 (from Blood & Venom)

Download Wet Hair – Echo Lady mp3 (from In Vogue Spirit)

New Album from Paleo

The King James Facebook by Paleo from his 2010 album A View of the Sky was one of our favourite tunes of the year, appearing in our 2010 Best Of Top Ten posting. Now the wandering folk troubadour is back with another album Fruit Of The Spirit, which will see a release on Partisan Records in June.

This time he has decided to try something which’d never occurred to him before: collaboration. Friends strode in from around the region – Chicago, Minneapolis, Iowa City, Rock Island, and Lawrence – and with next to no rehearsal and no lead sheets, they huddled for a three-day creative blitzkrieg. Electrofolk artist Cloud Dog lends samples and howls in the background, the bastard folkies from Minnesota add their sad, quirk-pop sensibility, and a revolving door of drummers and percussionists take turns on the kit.

Together they bottled a mischievous, mercurial record sparking with imperfection: the bruised, sweet, and colorful Fruit Of The Spirit.

Check out the excellent taster track In The Movies – two minutes of indie folk perfection with a melody so catchy you’ll be humming it for days.

Download Paleo – In The Movies mp3 (from Fruit Of The Spirit)

Download Paleo – The King James Fakebook mp3 (from A View Of The Sky)

Here at MM we share, chat, argue, bury and praise music on a pretty regular basis…like daily. So throughout the year, the Mackerel crew (Mrs Mackerel, Barry-Sean, Christy-Popper, Dr Roddy, Polly Pocket, Starbar, MM and others) keep their own ever-changing top tens ready for publication at the climax of the festive season.

So here are MM’s ten favourite tunes from 2010 – no claims on them being the best, but for many different reasons, these are the tracks that most struck a chord (no pun intended).

10 Phosphorescent – The Mermaid Parade (Download Here)

Phosphorescent just seem to get better and better. A wonderful album provided this superb tale of failed love told in a resigned, accepting way and accompanied by mournful pedal steel and piano.

9 Red Clay River – Rattlesnake Mountain (Download here)

Always loved a good dose of black hearted, downbeat, gothic country and Red Clay River deliver in spades with this skeletal gem.

8 Strand Of Oaks – Alex Kona

Alex Kona was 12 feet tall, his mother was killed by a bowling ball“, how could you not want to know the rest of the story? A standout track from a wonderful album of sparse fingerpicked folk and occasional psychedelic wigouts…Fast forward to track 5 below, or just stream the whole wonderful record.

7 Local Natives – World News (Download here)

While others in the Mackerel shoal may have been seduced by Airplanes, it was the propulsive, upbeat rhythms and effortlessly catchy chorus of World News that claimed my ears.

6 Stornoway – I Saw You Blink

The runaway feel good hit of the summer. Catchy, uplifting and a perfect soundtrack to the setting sun at the Truck Festival.

5 No Age – Fever Dreaming (Download here)

This song steamed out of the traps like it had just been released from the punk heydey of 1977 – and there is no higher praise in my book. Turn up loud and abuse the neighbours – especially if they’re like some of ours. Wankers.

4 Blitzen Trapper – The Man Who Would Speak True

On a par with their classic Black River Killer – a wonderfully surreal and compelling story of murder, trains, truth and gardening. Exceptional.

3 Howling Owls – Family Tree (Download here)

My favourite new band discovery of the year. One after another they sent songs MM’s way and all could have been top ten contenders. In the end it was this majestically malevolent ode to a dysfunctional family life where nothing is at it seems, or as it should be, that won out.

2 Wooden Wand – Uncle Bill (Download here)

A wonderfully poignant and nostalgic paean to a relative who is casting a knowing eye over his nephew’s mistakes and while he knows, he doesn’t tell. With lyrics that cut to the chase and tell a story that is as warm as it is personal. In a different day and age Wooden Wand would be a household name.

1 Black Mountain – Let Spirits Ride

Who cares if the riff is nicked from another song, or if it sounds like 1972. I don’t when it as good as this. Probably the one song in 2010 that I never ever skipped, that I always turned up to 11, and which, seen live at the End of the Road cemented its place as my number one.

Bubbling Under

1. Dr Dog – Later

2. Lumerians – Burning Mirrors

3.Tweak BirdA Sun Ahh Ahh

4. PaleoThe King James Fakebook

5. Mathew Sawyer & The Ghosts – Revenge Of The Extra From Zulu

Best Songs First Heard in 2010, but not 2010

1. Joe PugHymn 35

2.The Willard Grant Conspiracy – Drunkard’s Prayer

3.Knife In The Water – Young Blood In The River

Guilty Pleasure

I’m with Dr Roddy. Pure Eurovision perfection…Lena Mayer and Satellite.

Here is our regular round-up of the very best of October’s postings. Twenty great tracks for a great mix, plus three new ones to enjoy too. You can check out all of our previous best of the month mixes just by clicking the links for April, May, June, July. August and September.

No AgeFever Dreaming mp3 (from Everything In Between)

A full on, take-no-prisoners punk rock anthem with a massive guitar riff, howling vocals and brutal, pummeling percussive support.

Download Pop. 1280Step Into The Grid mp3 (from The Grid EP)

Want a mosh-pit meltdown in your front room? Be our guest with this three and a half minute junkyard gem.

Download Howling OwlsMood Ring mp3 (Demo)

Our favourite discovery of 2010. This one is a little quicker, more staccato, less downbeat, but lyrically still overwhelmed with regret and a barely containable bitterness.

Download Dr. DogNobody Knows Who You Are mp3 (from Tour 7”)

More ramshackle countrified goodness.

Download Giant SandFields Of Green mp3 (from Blurry Blue Mountain)

A gentle acoustic lament that Howe Gelb does better than just about anyone else.

Download Silver SwansAnyone’s Ghost mp3 (National Cover)

Icy synths and a gorgeous, breathy vocal to send shivers down the spine.

Download Indie FolkerMonsters In Rome mp3 (from Monsters In Rome)

Genuine home-made indie folk in the tradition of anti-folk if you know what we mean.

Download Lanterns On The LakeLungs Quicken mp3 (from Lungs Quicken 7”)

Lush poetic, experimental folk soundscapes that are as evocative as they are poignant.

Download Wounded LionPointed Sticks mp3 (from Pointed Sticks 7″)

Glam rock backbeat, handclaps and a catchy chorus.

Download CowlickWires mp3 (from Wires)

Hypnotically groovy.

Download The Morning BendersOutlaw Blues.mp3 (from Subterranean Homesick Blues: A Tribute to Bob Dylan’s ‘Bringing It All Back Home’)

Superb, metronomic cover of Dylan.

Download GenerationalsTrust mp3 (from Trust EP)

Shimmering hooks, girl-group choruses, and late-summer breeziness.

Download SalesmanSo Much Faster mp3 (from Red Wine Jug Lover 7”)

The desert-rock murder ballad of a dancing girl and her two boyfriends at a strip club called Deja Vu Showgirls.

Download The War On DrugsThe History Of Plastic mp3 (from Future Weather EP)

Sprawling, epic centrepiece of new EP/mini album.

Download Gross RelationsYou Don’t Know Me mp3 (from Fuzzy Timelines 7”)

Fuzzed up, reverb ridden, garage pop of the most infectious kind.

Download Kurt VileIn My Time mp3 (from In My Time)

Distorted prog-folk from forthcoming album.

Download PaleoThe King James Fakebook mp3 (from A View Of The Sky)

Calls on the spirits of Guthrie, Kerouac and other hipsters of old and simply and easily transports the listener through melodic landscapes unique, immediate, emotive, playful, and filled with longing.

Download Tapes ‘n TapesFreak Out mp3 (from Outside)

A frenetic romp that is catchier than just about anything we’ve heard so far this month.

Download Coma CinemaHell mp3 (from Blue Suicide)

A wonderfully aching and melancholic snapshot of genuine heartbreak.

Download The Asteroid #4Ignition Slated For Eight mp3 (from Hail To The Clear Figurines)

Hypnotic hybrid of several different genres filtered through the kaleidoscope of all things psych, krautrock, shoegaze, folk and even 70s ‘cosmic’ country-rock.

And some new ones for you too. First up Heartbreaker by Girls from their forthcoming new release Broken Dreams Club, the Crystal Castles get all Cured up with Robert Smith guesting and lastly Jordan Reyne’s wonderfully dark, industrial folk-noir from her album How The Dead Live.

Download Girls – Heartbreaker mp3 (from Broken Dreams Club)

Download Crystal Castles (featuring Robert Smith) – Not In Love mp3 (from Not In Love)

Download Jordan Reyne – The Proximity Of Death (Blue-Eyed Boy) mp3 (from How The Dead Live) Despite being sent this song by the PR company and asked to post it, some fuckwit is now alleging infringement of copyright and has had the song removed – we can’t do anything about this, but posted in good faith based on an authorisation that it was OK to offer for free download. Clearly a case of right hand and left hand and arseholes.

Mad Mackerel Recommends…Paleo

Yesterday Partisan Records released the latest full-length effort from Paleo entitled A View Of The Sky, available in CD, LP, Ltd. Edition Color Vinyl and Digital Download formats.

Paleo has been traveling the country for the last 6 years. Booking his own shows, he has been playing roughly 150 dates a year while living out of his car and staying with people kind enough to share a couch, a bed, and some breakfast. Homeless and at home, he seems to have found a refuge within his songs as a prolific lyricist and writer. He recorded a song every day for 365 days as a discipline in songwriting he called “The Song Diary”.

On his newest record, A View Of The Sky, the music mines depths beyond the traditional. Song after song calls on the spirits of Guthrie, Kerouac and other hipsters of old and simply and easily transports the listener through melodic landscapes unique, immediate, emotive, playful, and filled with longing.

Profound, enlightening, and memorable, A View Of The Sky is an unexpected delight and an unexpected treasure.
