mms-best-of-2016-header

Here are our favourite albums of 2016. We have to go against the flow a bit and say up front there is no place for David Bowie. Great though he was, and tragic that he died two days after the release of a good album, for us that was what it was, a good album, but not a great one. And besides he is topping damn near every other list.

video

Time to start the week with a few choice musical films… ten to be exact.

So come with us a follow a path from the brilliantly louche, disaffected punk of Dilly Dally to the off-kilter urgency of Velcro Hooks by way of the mediative melancholy of Daniel Martin Moore, the energetic alt-country blues of Alex Culbreth, and the tripped out psychedelics of the Lucid Dream and plenty more besides.

UK/Canadian hybrid four-piece Velcro Hooks will release their self-titled debut album on 1st April 2016 on Howling Owl Records.

They have shared the video for the brilliant buzzsaw spectacular that is Severin The Mind (with appropriate amount of chainsaws), and which is one of our favourite tracks of the year so far.

Watch the video and also stream Mid of May from the album too.

Bristol may be the only city rivalling Brighton for new music at the moment and Velcro Hooks are a Bristol based band who deal in the very best kind of fuzzed-out post-punk.

Since releasing a handful of well received singles and EPs via the excellent Howling Owl Records, they have been lying low for a little while, writing, recording, editing, and mixing their debut record, which will be out next year.

Severin The Mind is the brilliantly visceral first cut and their most jagged and raw track to date. Roll on the album we say…
